Cea Sunrise Person
Acerca de esta escucha
From the author of the best-selling memoir North of Normal comes the harrowing story of a past that won't let go, and one woman's attempt to put her life back together after everything falls apart.
In her best-selling memoir North of Normal, Cea wrote with grace about her unconventional childhood - her early years living in a tipi in Alberta with her pot-smoking, free-loving counterculture family. But her struggles do not end when she leaves her family at the age of 13 to become a model. Honest and daring, Nearly Normal reveals the many ways that Cea's unconventional childhood continues to reverberate through the years.
At the age of 37, Cea has built a life that looks like the normal one she craved as a child - husband, young son, beautiful house, enviable career. But her carefully art-directed world is about to crumble around her. As she confronts the death of her still-young mother, the disintegration of her second marriage and the demise of her business, all within a few months, she finally faces the need to look at her past to make sense of her present.
The Globe and Mail says "Person's best gifts as a writer are her memory, her knack for knowing when to dig down into the finer details of a scene, and when to pull back." Nearly Normal chronicles the many stories Cea left untold but that needed telling. Settled into a new and much happier life after the release of her first book, she is nonetheless compelled to continue searching for answers about her enigmatic family. She discovers the value in the lessons they taught her, and the power of taking responsibility for her own choices.

In the late 1960s, riding the crest of the counterculture movement, Cea's family left a comfortable existence in California to live off the land in the Canadian wilderness. But unlike most commune dwellers of the time, the Persons weren't trying to build a new society - they wanted to escape civilization altogether. Led by Cea's grandfather Dick, they lived a pot-smoking, free-loving, clothing-optional life under a canvas tipi without running water, electricity, or heat for the bitter winters.

Axton Betz-Hamilton grew up in small-town Indiana in the early '90s. When she was 11 years old, her parents both had their identities stolen. Their credit ratings were ruined, and they were constantly fighting over money. This was before the age of the Internet, when identity theft became more commonplace, so authorities and banks were clueless and reluctant to help Axton's parents.

Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their 12 children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins—aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Echoing among the Blue Ridge Mountains were the cries of newborn babies that disappeared into the night. The screams of children nearly drowned out by the sound of crickets. A girl, hidden and waiting to be found, terrified, and confused. The fireflies sparkling in the woods, bringing light to darkled places.

Growing up in the 1960s in the suburbs of Chicago, Meg Kissinger’s family seemed to live a charmed life. With eight kids and two loving parents, the Kissingers radiated a warm, boisterous energy. Whether they were spending summer days on the shores of Lake Michigan, barreling down the ski slopes, or navigating the trials of their Catholic school, the Kissingers always knew how to live large and play hard. But behind closed doors, a harsher reality was unfolding.

Historia
The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention. In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth.

Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

With a wealth of never-before-accessed materials, Heather Clark brings to life the brilliant Sylvia Plath, who had precocious poetic ambition and was an accomplished published writer even before she became a star at Smith College. Refusing to read Plath’s work as if her every act was a harbinger of her tragic fate, Clark considers the sociopolitical context as she thoroughly explores Plath’s world.

"In the summer of 1991 I was a normal kid. I did normal things. I had friends and a mother who loved me. I was just like you. Until the day my life was stolen. For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse. For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation. On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I dont think of myself as a victim. I survived...."

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

loved her tenacity. it was for sure a confusing childhood but she was able to provide security for her own children. and I think most of us understand loving someone in our family who's not a good influence. still what an incredible story.

Wow
So much I can relate to in this book! At the same time, I realize there’s so much more that could have happened to me.
Cea is a brave and strong soul, who brings light to darkness. I really get the sentence about having a God awful mother, yet missing her too!
Thank you Cea, for sharing not only your survival of your childhood, but like myself, you truly rose above it!
God Bless You!

I enjoyed the first book - couldn’t finish this one
I think it might always be a mistake to have an author narrate their own book. They’re not performers and it generally shows. This is no exception. Ms Person’s habit of elongating the final word of each sentence became annoying and hard to listen to.
Ultimately this story was just too much “navel gazing” for me. I certainly applaud the author’s incredible resilience and recognize the validity of her anger (who wouldn’t!?), but it wasn’t a story I found interesting enough to continue reading. I certainly wish her the best but this is a story best told to a therapist. Which, given what she has been through, the author deserves to have!

Really good, just one thing
I've enjoyed both of Cea's books. It might just be me, but there were a few words she used so often in this one that it really started to get on my nerves. "Tee pee camp" ...."Suzie Doll"....and "papa dick"......It got to the point that I told myself, if she says those words one more time i'm going to quit....but I wanted to hear the rest of the story so I hung in there. Other than that, great story told well.

excellent writing
I love how the author, CIA Sunshine Person reads her own story as written and doesn't try to make men voices different than her own. It's like reading it myself. Excellent Read.

Beautifully Shared Story
I can't even describe how glad I am that Cea finished her story with this book. When I finished the first book I genuinely wondered what had happened in the rest of Cea's life. She did a beautiful job of bringing me to her present, and also told many, many more details from her past that I had not heard before. It goes deeper into her soul and her experiences. She is so courageous and is a real life example of the power we have to conquer our pasts and fears. 💗💗💗
