The lovely debutante plans to steal a moment away with her beau, but her plans go terribly awry. Instead of her intended, she is joined by a stranger - the largest man she’s ever laid eyes on. And it is clear Jacob Steele is there for reasons far more sober than the party. With British raids erupting all around them, it is his job to reassure plantation owners of their safety.

Great Feel for the times
Would you listen to North and South again? Why?
No not again but I am not a listen a second time kind of guy. I will listen to the rest of the Jakes Trilogy though.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the characters as well as the way the book gives the reader (listener) a feel for the times. How the North viewed the South and vice versa
Have you listened to any of Grover Gardner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not that I remember
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

First of all, I love Grover Gardner. He is an excellent narrator and makes the characters come to life. This is also my first John Jakes book and I was pleasantly surprised and hooked. I'm looking forward to checking out his other books. His ability to weave characters together, create drama, and bring in historical accuracy was wonderful.

good read
I loved the Century trilogy and was hoping for something of similar awesomeness with this book. now it's no fall of giants but it's a good lovely read in its own right.

Interesting Look at Civil War Era Society & Culture
This book effectively uses the CW as a backdrop to explore the attitudes and culture of the divided Union and the cataclysm of slavery. I thought the characters were well developed with plenty of conflict and adversaries to keep it intriguing while observing the social norms and attitudes of that era. Grover Garner is an excellent narrator and I especially like because I can listen at 1.25 - 1.5x speed. I liked so much I subsequently purchased and listened to the final 2 volumes of which are no less compelling.
