Publisher's summary

Avremi Zippel always knew his life would be different. With a commitment to follow in his father's footsteps and serve as the Rabbi in Salt Lake City, he knew his life would defy stereotypes.

However, nothing could prepare him for the truly unexpected twists and turns reality had in store.

Not What I Expected tells the story of a young adult coming to terms with the decade of childhood sexual abuse experienced at the hands of the family caregiver and the decision to pursue a path of healing and embark on a perilous journey of seeking justice....

It is a tale of faith, hope, and belief, both in oneself and in something larger than self. It's a reminder that you can learn to find your voice when you commit to listening to yourself. Ultimately, it's a reminder that the most powerful and fulfilling life you can live is often the one you aren't expecting....

Incredible story told by the author

It was a privilege to have any part in this story but hearing it told by Avremi himself is a different kind of special. Avremi’s story is both tragic and triumphant - a story no one could ever expect but one where the good guys do win in the end. Congratulations!

Heartbreaking story told with grace and eloquence

Avremi’s abuse at the hands of his trusted babysitter is just the beginning. The abuse propelled him to be an advocate for victims everywhere
I cried and laughed and felt as if I was living through the drama of the trial along with Avremi and his family.
There are lessons for us all in this beautifully written and narrated book.

Such a moving story. couldn't stop listening

I'm not a survivor of CSA, but there are so many life lessons for any human. We all have a responsibility to learn and understand how it can happen so we can break the stigma, validate and believe survivors and give everyone the tools to make sure it doesn't happen.
Ultimately, everyone's journey includes pain, so hearing about his pain through so many different stages of life with such eloquent and emotional telling, really made me feel seen, like when the beginning of Fatherhood broke him.

His focus on how many good people there are and how the little good things people do, was also a refreshing insight.

I cried a few good times, and laughed too.

my two favorite moments are when he says that "concern for what other people think about you, is a reflection of what you think about yourself" is so powerful. and the letter to his 8 year old self at the end of his impact statement inspired my first song on my upcoming album.

Avremi, when the time comes for someone to consider marrying one of your sons, I would tell them that their father is a modern day Hero.

Thank you for owning your journey. G-d bless you.

Moving and sad and inspiring. Wow!!

I found myself being amazed at the courage it must have taken to Rabbi Zippel to come forward and share his experience the way he did!

Really enjoyed reading this!

This is a truly moving story about perseverance and strength. With openness and honesty, the author brings his readers on his journey- the journey of many victims of abuse, giving them a voice.
When he finally realizes he was a victim of abuse after years of being manipulated to think that he was at fault, he chooses to turn his life into one with a mission- a mission of inspiration and hope for countless others. The shift he had in the moment it hit him that he needs to come out, even as he was still in such a vulnerable stage, is so powerful. He didn't come out for attention or revenge. He knew the world needed it. And he was so right!
I was also inspired how throughout his journey he chose to turn towards G-d instead of against G-d.
There is also lots of wisdom weaved into the book, such as how to truly care for another person (and how much it meant to him to have those people in his life).
I'm sure this book, with G-d's help, will help bring healing to all survivors of abuse and will help others understand them better.

An Enlightening and Inspiring Listen. A must read/listen to book!

I just finished listening to this incredibly compelling audiobook. The captivating nature of the story made it difficult to pause - it truly demands your attention.

The author's recounting of his personal experiences offers a profound perspective on the severity of abuse, the aftermath of living with such experiences, and the daunting process of reporting it. Although I had previously heard about his story, the depth and nuance presented in this book brought a newfound understanding to the gravity of the situation. The narrative goes beyond just recounting the events; it manages to humanize the struggles and imbue the reader with empathy and awareness.

The book stands out as an inspiration, a support, and an educational resource. It has the potential to resonate with many, whether they have faced similar situations or seek to understand the experiences of those who have.

Furthermore, the author's writing and storytelling skills deserve praise. Unlike many audiobooks, this one is not just read; it's performed with a level of narration that is truly engaging. The author's delivery is effortlessly listenable, making it an excellent companion for any activity, even a run.

The author's hard work and determination shine through in every word, leaving readers eagerly anticipating his next book. This work is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of speaking one's truth.

Riveting.

Excellent audio recording in the author’s own words which brings an added dimension to a riveting story of sexual abuse and its life-long effects. Bravo, Avremi, for telling your story with pathos and with humor. I applaud you.
