About this listen
Sometimes the oldest secrets are the hardest ones to keep.
When retired police detective Albert Smith and his dog wander into a small town in the French mountains, no one expects the trouble they will uncover.
A body has been unearthed at a nearby archaeological dig and it's clear no one was ever supposed to find it. The locals deny all knowledge; they have no idea who it could be, but there is something disturbing about how they all give the exact same answer.
And what of the archaeologists? What were they really looking for? It wasn't the Stone Age settlement they claim to be after. Does everyone in this town have a secret they don't want exposed?
Together with his trusted sidekick, Albert and Rex are going to get to the bottom of the mystery.
He could walk away, there's nothing to make him investigate. But Albert has an old school way of thinking and when things don't add up he just cannot help but poke his nose in.

Detective Lauren Pengelly has only been part of the Penzance police force for less than two years, but that’s enough time to know that the sleepy Cornish town doesn’t see many murders. So, when the bones of a woman with a hole in her skull are discovered behind a derelict cottage, she immediately assumes the worst. Rallying her team, Lauren is flooded with a strange sense of relief when the bones turn out to be almost twenty years old, not a recent victim. But it quickly turns to dread when she receives her second heart-stopping call of the day–a little girl, Isla, has been kidnapped.

Story
Verity King has a problem with her husband. He’s been turned into a frog, and contrary to opinion, that’s not an improvement. A cryptic message, a severed finger in her fridge, and no signs of forced entry make it clear to Tempest why he was called, but Mr King’s worrying transformation is just the first act. Almost before he can add up the clues, a second victim confirms the theme and Tempest finds himself up against someone performing modern retellings of the Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales … with real live human characters. Tempest also has a new partner and it’s not his old army...

Arriving in the famous English seaside resort, Albert plans only to reminisce about a childhood holiday more than 70 years in the past. While there, he will eat the town’s most famous creation—the sugary treat known as rock. But when he walks into a shop being shaken down by heavies enforcing a protection racket, all thoughts of relaxation go out the window. Instantly marked when Rex rousts the criminals, Albert must choose whether to leave the town—the sensible choice—or unravel the gang’s plans—the option containing the greatest likelihood for mayhem and danger.

Love Rex!
I just love the portrayal of the dog. He reminds me of my German Shepherd Chesterfield. I also love how Higgs books car be listening at any time without foul language, sex and major violence. I hope he keeps writing them.
