Story
For four years, from the election of John Fitzgerald Kennedy until after the election of Lyndon Johnson, Clint Hill was the Secret Service agent assigned to guard the glamorous and private Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. During those four years, he went from being a reluctant guardian to a fiercely loyal watchdog and friend. Looking back, Clint Hill tells his story for the first time, offering a tender and tragic portrayal of how a Secret Service agent who started life in an orphanage became the most trusted man in the life of the First Lady who captivated first the nation and then the world.

From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

The Kennedys have always been a family of charismatic adventurers, raised to take risks and excel, living by the dual family mottos: "To whom much is given, much is expected" and "Win at all costs". And they do - but at a price. Across decades and generations, the Kennedys have occupied a unique place in the American imagination: charmed, cursed, at once familiar and unknowable. The House of Kennedy is a revealing, fascinating account of America's most storied family, as told by America's most trusted storyteller.

Despite being hailed as one of the best guitarists of his era, George Harrison, particularly in his early decades, battled feelings of inferiority. He was often the butt of jokes from his bandmates owing to his lower-class background and, typically, was allowed to contribute only one or two songs per Beatles album out of the dozens he wrote.

Publisher's summary
In the summer of 1962, 19-year-old Mimi Beardsley arrived by train in Washington, D.C., to begin an internship in the White House press office. The Kennedy Administration had reinvigorated the capital and the country - and Mimi was eager to contribute. For a young woman from a privileged but sheltered upbringing, the job was the chance of a lifetime. Although she started as a lowly intern, Mimi made an impression on Kennedy's inner circle and, after just three days at the White House, she was presented to the President himself.
Almost immediately, the two began an affair that would continue for the next 18 months.
In an era when women in the workplace were still considered "girls", Mimi was literally a girl herself - naive, innocent, emotionally unprepared for the thrill that came when the President's charisma and power were turned on her full-force. She was also unprepared for the feelings of isolation that would follow as she fell into the double life of a college student who was also the secret lover of the most powerful man in the world.
Then, after the President's tragic death in Dallas, she grieved in private, locked her secret away, and tried to start her life anew, only to find that her past would cast a long shadow and ultimately destroy her relationship with the man she married.
In 2003, a Kennedy biographer mentioned "a tall, slender, beautiful 19-year-old college sophomore and White House intern, who worked in the press office" in reference to one of the President's affairs. The disclosure set off a tabloid frenzy and soon exposed Mimi and the secret that she had kept for 41 years. Because her past had been revealed in such a shocking, public way, she was forced, for the first time, to examine the choices she'd made. She came to understand that shutting down one part of her life so completely had closed her off from so much more.
No longer defined by silence or shame, Mimi Alford has finally unburdened herself with this searingly honest account of her life and her extremely private moments with a very public man. Once Upon a Secret offers a new and personal depiction of one of our most iconic leaders and a powerful, moving story of a woman coming to terms with her past and moving out of the shadows to reclaim the truth.
Critic reviews
“With the benefit of hindsight and good old-fashioned maturity, [Mimi Alford] writes not just about the secret, but the corrosive effect of keeping that secret.... You can’t help liking her, or her elegant and thoroughly good-natured book.” (The Spectator)
“Compelling...a polished voice telling a credible story you can take to the bank.” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer)
“Explosive...searingly candid.” (New York Post)

In The Diana Chronicles, you will meet a formidable female cast and understand as never before the society that shaped them: among them, Diana's sexually charged mother, her bad-girl sister-in-law, Fergie, and, most formidable of them all, her mother-in-law, the Queen. Add Camilla Parker-Bowles, the ultimate "other woman" into this combustible mix, and it's no wonder that Diana broke out of her royal cage into celebrity culture, where she found her own power and used it to devastating effect.

Marina and Lee is one of the best and truest audiobooks about the Kennedy assassination. Priscilla Johnson McMillan came to the story with a unique knowledge of the two main characters. In the 1950s she knew Kennedy well for a time when he was hospitalized with Addison's disease. She talked to him frequently, brought him books, knew his wife, and formed a strong opinion of the sort of man he was. What is astonishing is that she also knew Lee Harvey Oswald.

"To begin with I was in love and I am in love so that's not hard," Barbara Bush told her granddaughter Ellie LeBlond Sosa. Sosa had asked for the secret to her and President George H.W. Bush's 77-year love affair that withstood World War II separation, a leap of faith into the oil fields of West Texas, the painful loss of a child, a political climb to the highest office, and after the White House, the transition back to a "normal" life. Sosa and co-author Kelly Anne Chase paint the portrait of the enduring relationship of George and Barbara Bush.

A Lie Too Big to Fail asserts the idea that a government can never investigate itself in a crime of this magnitude. Was the convicted Sirhan Sirhan a willing participant? Or was he a mind-controlled assassin? It has fallen to independent researchers like Pease to lay out the evidence in a clear and concise manner, allowing listeners to form their theories about this event. Pease places the history of this event in the context of the era and provides shocking overlaps between other high-profile murders and attempted murders of the time.

A Real Look Behind the Kennedy White House
What made the experience of listening to Once Upon a Secret the most enjoyable?
A real eye-opener on the antics of the President. Makes one wonder how he stayed on top of everything (no pun intended), and how many others are still out there.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mimi Alford
Which character – as performed by Susan Denaker – was your favorite?
All were commendable
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Amazed at how all this took place.

Honesty & Transparency
I was referred this title by another Audible member. Biographies are not really my genre unless it’s required for school. However, I thought hearing someone else’s account of their interactions or very CLOSE interactions with JFK would seem intriguing, since the time period during this book is beyond my generation. Despite my own reservations with listening to Mimi’s story, I appreciated the honesty in her reasoning.
If you’re currently listening to this title thinking “oh I’m going to stop listening after JFK’s death,” please don’t! Mimi takes us on a journey of how her CLOSE interactions with JFK shaped her life even in her 60’s.

Inspiring
I started listening to this book out of curiosity. I was a freshman in high school when JFK became president. And I was awestruck by him and the beautiful Jackie. I am particularly interested in mémoires and and history. I didn’t suspect how much I would learn about life and myself from Mimi’s story. She’s a remarkable woman whom I admire more than I would have imagined.

Interesting Memoir
Interesting memoir about our Favourite Philandering President.
I had a hard time buying her recall of her first encounter with him – I find it difficult to believe her naivete. It was as if all the events were happening to her and she was just a cog in the wheel. A helpless deer in the headlights powerless to say no. Perhaps 19 year olds really were like that in the 60s as opposed to when I was that age in the 90s, but I find it hard to believe.
Later in the book as she talks more about her motivations, she explains how she felt seduced and enamoured and flattered and special… THAT I do believe! I just think she felt that way from the word GO but perhaps does not want to remember it that way because she feels too ashamed or judged?
I also found her “sudden” after-the-fact-realization that she stopped being intimate with him right around the time she got engaged a little too convenient.
Ultimately, we must take her word for it. It’s her story after all so I give her the benefit of the doubt.

Disturbing
What did you love best about Once Upon a Secret?
I found the book to be a little disturbing due to I was 7 at the time President Kennedy was killed. I looked up to him then and did until I read the book. I think everyone knew he had affairs but for him to do this to Jacklyn and with a 19 year old girl, I find it shocking.
It has changed my view of him completely.....I feel very sad for his family.
Have you listened to any of Susan Denaker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I really liked listening to her. She draws you in.

Yikes!
I am old enough to remember the Kennedy "Camelot" story and where I was when I heard that Kennedy had been shot. I have heard rumors and stories about what a womanizer he was alleged to be but this book makes it all so much more real.
I guess we all need to draw our own conclusions about Jack Kennedy. I enjoyed listening to the story but it almost seemed like a fairy tale - so bold!!
Good to hear that Ms. Alford has come through intact and she can now tell her story. Fortunately, I think she is a good and thoughtful writer.

Heartbreakingly Triumphant
Wonderfully narrated. I felt myself feeling like Alice in wonderland, hopeful and seemingly happy then suddenly tumbling down a rabbit hole of intoxicating quandary, bewildering sadness, and eventual peace redemption and contentment. Mimi's real life reads like a real life Forrest Gump - complete with monumental moments, rough terrain, serendipitous epiphanies and life lessons learned. I've such respect for her journey and I'm so happy for her happily ever after... even though my heart swelled and my eyes welled with tears at the end of her true life story - the gift for me personally was hope.
