About this listen

International best-selling author Lindsey Davis has done in the mystery genre what Caesar did in Gaul: came, saw, and conquered! Her innovative series put hard-boiled detective Marcus Didius Falco, "the Sam Spade of ancient Rome" (Publishers Weekly), on the mean streets of the Eternal City. Now Davis returns to AD 74 with a riveting investigation into a missing child.

Men are fools for love. And that includes Marcus Didius Falco. To please his beloved, the tough shamus has become Procurer of the Sacred Poultry (i.e., babysitter of the temple geese). It's steady work and good pay, but Falco is soon restless. So when a beautiful child, chosen to enter the secret order of Vestal Virgins, disappears, he grabs the case. He quickly discovers that greed and religious fervor are only a thread away from madness. And a little girl's life may be cut short, not by Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, but by a sinister human hand - unless Falco finds her in time.

Yesss another Falco reading!

Just absolutely love these. Their Rhythms and rich detail. Poor Marcus always screwed over though. Come on author! Help a good Roman out!

Possibly my favorite Falco book

Finally, with Falco being elevated in rank, he has finally stopped fixating on whether or not Helena loves him. This is a marked improvement in his character. With this book, the series takes on a new tone. I hope it continues, Not that I didn't like the earlier books, I was just tired by book 10 of the Falco's insecurities and everything always going wrong for him. Now that he is a new man, shall we say, new adventures are available to him and the reader.

The most memorable Falco book of all.

Simon Prebble perfectly narrates an outstanding story, taking us inside the ancient and traditional parts of Roman religion - and a murder therein. Brilliantly woven, perfectly paced, Lindsey Davis writes brilliantly, with the most haunting ending of all.

Wonderful Book!

What an interesting, well told tale. I was feeling as if I’d read everything on earth that was worth reading, until I found this author. Lindsey Davis is so good that it doesn’t seem possible. The narration is wonderful as well.

Satisfying in many ways

Mystery, history, and sly humor by the author, and an outstanding performance by Mr. Pebble. It hits the sweet spot for me.

Continued excellence

Lindsay Davis just gets better and better. This was one was especially wonderful. I had 45 minutes left of the book to listen to and all of a sudden Audible decided it was no longer a title that is included with our membership, I had to go to a bookshop and read the last bit of the book to get the ending. Thumbs down to Audible

Falco has the voice of an old man!!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes the Narrator, Falco sounds as thou he is to celebrate his 60th birthday instead of a rough and tumble ex veteran

Who was your favorite character and why?

falco

Would you be willing to try another one of Simon Prebble’s performances?

doubtful

Any additional comments?

you suck no Robert Wilson and others that you do not carry your selection and quality has gone down hill

Excellent!

A gripping combination of history, and who done it. Lindsey Davis demonstrates mastery, yet again, the historical novel set in the Roman period.
