What does it mean to "think Orthodox"? What are the unspoken and unexplored premises and presumptions underlying what Christians believe? Orthodox Christianity is based on preserving the mind of the early Church, its phronema. Dr. Jeannie Constantinou brings her more than 40 years' experience as a professor, Bible teacher, and speaker to bear in explaining what the Orthodox phronema is, how it can be acquired, and how that phronema is expressed in true Orthodox theology.

The Religion of the Apostles presents the Orthodox Christian Church of today as a continuation of the religious life of the apostles, which in turn was a continuation of the life of the people of God since the beginning of creation.

In this classic book, John of Damascus laboured to form one complete, clear, and brief theological work that would summarize all Christian doctrine that had been passed down and agreed upon. These are the words or sayings (Apophthegmata), of various monks (the abbas, i.e. fathers) who lived in the deserts of Egypt between 250 A.D. and 400 A.D. They cover topics such as love, poverty, fasting, humility, and prayer, and there is usually a short story that gives the context of the sayings. These sayings are one of the few surviving records of the first monks such as St. Anthony the Great and St. Pachomius, who followed a strict way of life. Their sole aim was to draw closer to God through their labours.

Over the centuries since the Great Schism between the Eastern and Western Churches, the two groups have diverged to the point that they often no longer understand each other’s vocabulary, let alone the fundamental concepts on which each faith is built. Know the Faith is an attempt to present Orthodox Christianity in a way Western Christians can understand, grounding each point in Scripture and patristic theology, with comparisons to what Catholics and Protestants believe.

Speaking to non-believers and believers alike, Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick attempts to create a sacred space in which we can encounter God. In this compact volume, he distills the essence of the traditional Christian faith, addressing the fundamental mysteries of where God is, who God is, why we go to church, and why Christian morality matters. If you’ve only heard about the Protestant or Roman Catholic version of Christianity, what he has to say may surprise you—and make you long to encounter God in Jesus Christ.

For Protestants or Catholics seeking to understand Eastern Orthodoxy, the Cross is a good place to start. In the West a multitude of different views sprang up over the last millennium, but Orthodox Christian beliefs have remained unchanged. The contrast between those views is suggested by the two images on the book's cover, showing how differently the meaning of the Cross was understood, East and West.

Historia
Orthodoxy is the dominant form of Christianity in Greece, Russia, parts of Eastern Europe, and the Balkans. Its practices are largely unfamiliar in the West and have remained essentially unchanged since the earliest days of the faith. This lucid introduction outlines the tenets, nature, and holy days of Orthodox belief with the Western listener in mind. It describes the physical church, especially icons, services, and common practices, and it offers advice to visitors on how to conduct themselves so that they are accepted and feel comfortable.

The Apostolic Fathers are the Christian writers from the first and second centuries who are thought to have been disciples of the Apostles or to have been so directly influenced by the Apostles that their writings are considered echoes of genuine Apostolic teaching. Their writings form a link of tradition that binds these writings to those of the New Testament. Chief among the apostolic fathers are the three first-century Bishops: St. Clement of Rome, St. Ignatius of Antioch, and St. Polycarp of Smyrna, who were disciples of St. Peter and St. John.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is not about what Jesus can do for your life. It is not even the answer to the question, “How can I be saved?” It is the declaration of a victory. In his coming to earth, his suffering, and his Resurrection, Christ conquered demons, sin, and death. In Arise, O God, author and podcaster Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick introduces us to the spiritual war that Christ won by his victory, how we are caught in that war’s cosmic crossfire, what the true content of the gospel is—and how we are to respond.

Historia
To many in the West, Orthodoxy remains shrouded in mystery, an exotic and foreign religion that survived in the East following the Great Schism of 1054 that split the Christian world into two camps - Catholic and Orthodox. However, as the second largest Christian denomination, Orthodox Christianity is anything but foreign to the nearly 300 million worshipers who practice it. For them, Orthodoxy is a living, breathing reality; a way of being Christian ultimately rooted in the person of Jesus and the experience of the early church.

A brief introduction to Orthodox Christianity
- De Adam Shields en 05-27-24
Resumen del Editor
Explore the rich spiritual world of Eastern Christian and its 2,000-year history of faith.
Tracing their history back to the Apostolic Age, Eastern Christian churches keep alive ancient traditions. Their perspectives are fresh yet steeped in history, familiar yet unique. Now, this 12-lecture course offers you a glimpse into the living faith of the Eastern Christian churches and the early traditions that shaped all of Christianity, Eastern and Western.
Your guide is award-winning professor Stefanos Alexopoulos, an Orthodox priest who teaches at The Catholic University of America. Under his guidance, you will explore the Eastern spiritual perspectives on such topics as scripture, monasticism, prayer, liturgy, salvation, repentance, and the saints. By looking at these themes through a new lens, you will discover what makes Eastern Christianity different from and similar to Western Christianity.
Scholarly yet accessible, these engaging lectures invite you to encounter these traditions and practices firsthand and to uncover the treasures of Eastern Christianity. Today, millions of indigenous Christians live out the Gospel in homelands hostile toward their faith - a faith for which many die as martyrs. These lectures will help you recognize these Eastern Christians as your brothers and sisters in faith. Let the faith of your fellow Christians inspire your own as you bear witness to Christ.
This course is part of the Learn25 collection.
Reseñas de la Crítica
"Stefanos Alexopoulos represents the best of a new generation of scholars who study Eastern Christian Liturgy. Coming from a traditional Orthodox country and educated in the best schools in North America, he ably combines authentic experience with rigorous study in his scholarship. His work is thus reliable, accessible, and fresh for those new to this field." (Very Rev. Alexander Rentel, director of the master of divinity program, St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary)
"Stefanos Alexopoulos is a highly regarded specialist in Byzantine Liturgy and has studied and written on its place in the wider context of the theological and spiritual traditions of the other Christian Churches of the East. Recent world events have drawn our attention to the Christians of Egypt, Armenia, Iraq, Turkey, and other places. I am delighted to know that the spiritual heritages of these Christians will be made available more widely in a series of presentations by this excellent scholar and engaging speaker." (Dominic E. Serra, SLD)
"Noted author, priest, scholar, and teacher, there is no one better than Fr. Stefanos Alexopoulos to introduce the distinct spirituality of the Christian East. His work is firmly based in Scripture, the Fathers of the Church, and, not least, in the Church's classic Liturgy and the best of contemporary liturgical-theological scholarship. For the spirituality of the Christian East, as Fr. Stefanos teaches, is at heart a liturgical spirituality." (The Rev. Dr. Maxwell E. Johnson, professor of liturgy, University of Notre Dame)

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

The book of Enoch was thought to be lost for over 2,000 years until, in 1773, a traveller brought three copies back from Ethiopia. Whether or not this ancient book was actually authored by Enoch, the father of Methuselah and great-grandfather of Noah, is an ongoing debate among historians and theologians. But all recognise the book of Enoch as one of the most important apocalyptic works outside of the Bible.

Historia
The book of Enoch was thought to be lost for over 2,000 years until, in 1773, a traveller brought three copies back from Ethiopia. Whether or not this ancient book was actually authored by Enoch, the father of Methuselah and great-grandfather of Noah, is an ongoing debate among historians and theologians. But all recognise the book of Enoch as one of the most important apocalyptic works outside of the Bible.

The secret to happiness is to acknowledge and transform suffering, not to run away from it. Here, Thich Nhat Hanh offers practices and inspiration transforming suffering and finding true joy. Thich Nhat Hanh acknowledges that because suffering can feel so bad, we try to run away from it or cover it up by consuming. We find something to eat or turn on the television. But unless we’re able to face our suffering, we can’t be present and available to life, and happiness will continue to elude us.

Historia
Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.
