"... on a par with ... Steinbeck, Berry, and Hemingway, and its emotional force and flavor are equivalent to what those authors can deliver, too." - Booklist

Not one of my favorites

This book was good untill the end. It left me empty. I loved the old man, but I wanted to know more, and was dissapointed that I was left out in the cold...so to speak.

Not Disappointing - Amazing!

Would you listen to Out Stealing Horses again? Why?

To say that the ending is disappointing is to miss the point of the book. This book is a first person, stream of consciousness narrative about the impact a person's life adventures have had on him. Characters like

What about Richard Poe???s performance did you like?

Richard Poe WAS Trond, and he made me care about Trond from Minute One. His narration was understated and perfect for the book.

Beautifully written story

Vivid imagery and tender details of a boy’s relationship with his father remembered from the perspective of the boy now an older man. This one got me square in the heart. Yes, the ending leaves many of the characters’ stories unfinished but that is the point…. Tron doesn’t know and so we don’t know either and that’s life.

Great narrator, disjointed story

In spite of the fabulous reviews, I really struggle with stories that go back and forth in time. Sometimes books have a notation as to which timeframe we’re in, and maybe that’s just missing in this audible version. What really frustrates me is the “chapters” in the audible recording do not match the chapters in the book. That makes it even harder to figure out where I am in the book. I don’t know why they feel they have to just divide the narrations into chapters of equal length in spite of the actual chapters. I hate that.

Excellent!

Enjoyed the story very much! This book was recommended by someone who is a voracious reader. I most likely would not have selected the book to read on my own as I was not familiar with the author.

dont bother

What would have made Out Stealing Horses better?

make it a short story.

Would you ever listen to anything by Per Petterson again?

maybe

Did Richard Poe do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The only character that is clear is the protagonist, a total jerk.

What character would you cut from Out Stealing Horses?

the protagonist seems a total asshole, and the more I read, the more I disliked him.

Any additional comments?

I kept waiting to reach the end, but instead it just suddenly stopped.

i'd give it a "zero" if there was one

i read the other reviews, and what-da???!!!*%$# heck?? are you people nuts! that was the worst audible book EVER!!! it sucks!! the whole story. what story? it's terrible, not entertaining in any way, not suspenceful, not sad, not happy, just bla. and it sure is not about stealing horses. i finished it only cuz once i start something i have to finish it and i really regret having that as one of my personality traits. i will say one positive thing... the narrator has a good voice
