About this listen

Matthew Scudder, a down-but-not-out-detective, is shocked by the apparent suicide of Paula, a waitress at Armstrong’s, one of Scudder’s hangouts. When Paula’s sister shows up and asks Matt to investigate what she believes to be a murder, Scudder agrees to take on the case. A number of clues don’t add up to suicide, and Scudder’s investigation leads him to the dark corners of Paula’s world.

An interesting short story.

This is an interesting short story in his typical style.

It’s worth a listen to while away an hour.

Brevity doesn’t work!

Story was far too short to be developed properly. Just as it started to get interesting, it was over!

Missing chapters

Missing the end of the story. Very frustrating. Also frustrating is the minimum word requirement

Great little short story.

My first Lawrence Block in many years, and first ever audio book with him narrating. I started with a free “included” title because a reviewer of one of his complained about his voice - called it “whiny”. His voice is fine, far from whiny, a different/odd (smoker? Idk) but fine to listen to and I always love a self narrated book — you know you’re getting all the right emphases and pauses, etc. Anyway, intriguing, nice pace, a little snack.

Good detective story.

It has been at least 30 years since I read a Lawrence Block novel. I read them on long international flights when traveling on business. What I liked about his novels is that they were interesting enough to entertain me wile awake but never interesting enough to keep me from going to sleep. That is a fine line that this author filled. This novella is the Lawrence Block that I remember.

Suicide or Murder

This is one of those short, sweet stories that keeps your attention. A waitress that works at a bar Scudder frequents falls from her 17th floor apartment. Was it suicide or murder? Scudder doggedly searches for the answer.

Could not finish

Mr Block should write but NOT NARRATE. His reading was so unbalanced; up and down sentence sounds. Ugh
