Publisher's summary

When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, it's up to six college students and their experimental physics project to prevent the end of civilization.

When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away.

Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet. The team has just hours to get as many people as possible across to Outland before a lethal cloud of ash overwhelms them.

Nothing has prepared the refugees for what they find - a world of few resources and unprecedented dangers. Somehow, they must learn to survive, because Outland may not just be a safe haven - it could be their new home.

Editor's Pick

We're (not) canceling the Apocalypse!
"When I was a child, my dad dispassionately told me that a shield volcano beneath Yellowstone National Park could erupt in our lifetime, spreading ash that would destroy life in the Midwest as we know it—and that this very shield volcano already caused geysers to spew boiling water hundreds of feet into the air! I was immediately enthralled. So much so, in fact, that we visited Yellowstone National Park the following year. Alas, upon arrival, I was heartbroken (and very confused) to learn that Old Faithful was "under construction." I mean... what?? How could the face of an apocalyptic force be subject to the same repair verbiage as a broken escalator? In my mind, the apocalypse had been canceled. Thankfully, Dennis E. Taylor is here to heal the geyser-sized hole in my inner child’s heart, for this same shield volcano serves as the cataclysmic basis for Outland’s riveting story. Throw in some inter-dimensional portals, hard sci-fi elements, and a new world—then add in Ray Porter’s effortless charisma as narrator—and you’ve got the perfect sci-fi listen for anyone who's ever had their childlike wonderment ruined by everyday pragmatism." —Sean T., Audible Editor

Love this book!

What can i say? I was a HUGE fan of the Bobbiverse books so I was expecting a lot. This book didn't disappoint. Ray Porter can narrate anyone's grocery list and it will sound compelling. He's the best narrator around!

The story moves fast and grabs you from start to finish. Dennis E. Taylor has a special knack for making nerds heroic and sympathetic characters. It doesn't always work for other authors.

I heard there is supposed to be a 2nd book. I can't wait!

Fantastic ! Blew through it in 3 days !

I am now a full on Dennis E. Taylor fan and convert. I devoured the Bob books and the Singularity Trap, and now Outland popped onto my feed. Fun story - think Stargate meets 2012 (but more SG1 and only the disaster elements of 2012). I like the “consequences piling up” aspects that make it feel more realistic. As a bonus, to hear this is only book one of an upcoming series made my day !

great story

A great twist on the alternate universe story. Dennis Taylor has extended his Bobiverse personalities without using the same characters. Can't wait for the next one.

Fun cinematic adventure

Dennis E. Taylor is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. He has fun movie-esque concepts and the books are light sci-fi adventures. I saw that this new title of his came out yesterday and immediately bought it and clicked play. I finished it today. I enjoyed it. It felt like a popcorn film. I hope that it becomes an actual popcorn film.

My only real complaint on this one, which may be unpopular, is the narrator. Now, Ray Porter has done great on the Bobiverse and Singularity books from Taylor, but here, the vast majority of the cast are college students. Porter just sounds too old and mature for their voices. You hear the characters and kinda assume they are 30-40 somethings until you have a jolt back and realize they should all be 20-somethings. That has an effect. I would have preferred a younger narrator to help catch the feel of the young cast of characters.

looking forward to new books

This was fun. Not Jurassic Park, but I don't think that was his aim. But what it was, Was Fun.

Definitely a fun listen

Not a masterpiece, but a darn fun thing to listen to. Definitely recommend this as a light listen with fun sci fi moments. Stargate like.
