Publisher's summary

It seems like the days of flipping through vast vinyl, cassette, or CD collections is a thing of the past. And while there's no denying the convenience of having all your favorite albums on a mobile device, it's becoming more common for recordings to get lost in the shuffle and/or completely forgotten about.

Author/journalist Greg Prato is willing to provide some assistance, with his 12th book overall, Overlooked/Underappreciated: 354 Recordings That Demand Your Attention. You will find countless albums that you may have completely forgotten about or perhaps have never even heard of before. Either way, all 354 of these titles get the "Prato Stamp of Approval". Starting with AC/DC's "Flick of the Switch" and wrapping up with Zombi's "Surface to Air", countless styles of music are represented in between - rock 'n' roll, hard rock, heavy metal, alternative, new wave, punk, hardcore, grunge, jazz, fusion, psychedelic, prog, folk, blues, funk, soul, rap, spoken word, power pop, big band, glam, experimental, instrumental, soundtracks...the list goes on and on. But the selections stay strong!

Music you may have overlooked

I don't know about, but I am always open to finding new music or being reminded of songs I may have overlooked. Author Greg Prato has crafted a list of gems that definitely deserve your consideration. He presents an eclectic mix of obscure tracks with hit songs. Prato shares the influences for the tracks, and which songs inspired other tunes.

I appreciate how Prato breaks down each recording into categories, such as similarities to other works, how the author discovered each album and suggestions for follow ups. He also offers scrutiny and picks the best tracks from each record. The book is not limited by any musical genres, but offers masterpieces from the pop, rock, metal, funk, new wave, hip hop, and grunge worlds.

The author analyzes offerings from such acts as Alice Cooper, the Beach Boys, The Cars, David Bowie, Prince, and Jimi Hendrix. He also suggests works from works of lesser-known acts, such as Bad Brains, the Buzzcocks, Missing Persons, and The Bongos. I found their track "Mambo Sun" a few years ago and enjoyed hearing the history of the song.

For someone that grew up visiting record stores, and buying albums from record clubs, this is a welcomed work. Listening to the audiobook, brought me back to the days of visiting the mall and shopping at the local Harmony House to navigate through the new releases or investigate which records were on sale or on the clearance racks.
