Story
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

Famously beautiful, as captured in a portrait with diamond stars in her hair, she is unfulfilled in her marriage to the older Emperor Franz Joseph. Sisi has spent years evading the stifling formality of royal life on her private train or yacht or, whenever she can, on the back of a horse. Captain Bay Middleton is dashing, young, and the finest horseman in England. He is also impoverished, with no hope of buying the horse needed to win the Grand National....

With the 75th anniversary of Citizen Kane in May 2016, Harlan Lebo has written the full story of Orson Welles' masterpiece film. The book explores Welles' meteoric rise to stardom in New York and the real reason behind his arrival in Hollywood and unprecedented contract with RKO Studios for total creative control. It also delves into the dispute over who wrote the script; the mystery of the "lost" final script; and the plot by Hearst to destroy Welles' project through blackmail, media manipulation, and other tactics.

Story
Early one morning, less than a month after her 18th birthday, Alexandrina Victoria is roused from bed with the news that her uncle William IV has died, and she is now queen of England. The men who run the country have doubts about whether this sheltered young woman, who stands less than five feet tall, can rule the greatest nation in the world. Surely she must rely on her mother and her venal advisor, Sir John Conroy, or her uncle, the Duke of Cumberland, who are all too eager to relieve her of the burdens of power.

How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Following six years of painstaking archival research, Claire Prentice has prised open the door of the Wendels’ Fifth Avenue mansion—dubbed “the house of mystery” by the press—to reveal a fascinating and dysfunctional family imprisoned in a gilded cage.

In fact, except for one shocking moment that seemed more like a dream, Lorelei never fully realized who and what her father was nor what her sisters were brought up to do for him. But one day, that all changed.

Story
Cold Hand in Mine stands as one of Aickman's best collections and contains eight stories that show off his powers as a 'strange story' writer to the full. The listener is introduced to a variety of characters, from a man who spends the night in a Hospice to a German aristocrat and a woman who sees an image of her own soul. There is also a nod to the conventional vampire story ("Pages from a Young Girl's Journal") but all the stories remain unconventional and inconclusive, which perhaps makes them all the more startling and intriguing.

Born to elegant but frivolous parents, Harriet grows up ignored and unguided, and retains a curious innocence that neither her marriage to Freddie Lytton, nor her friendship with the beautiful Tessa can dispel. Freddie is far older than she is - a companion rather than a lover - and slightly disapproving of Tessa and her irresponsible, attractive husband, Jack. Yet all four are bound together: by their backgrounds, their children, by Harriet’s unspoken feelings for Jack and by the tragedy that lies in wait for all of them.

The scene of this entertaining story is laid in a charming English village. The plot centres round Miss Barbara Buncle, a maiden lady who was obliged to write a book because – as she naively explained – her dividends were so poor. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul.

Brilliantly evoking the long-vanished world of masters and servants portrayed in Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs, Margaret Powell’s classic memoir of her time in service, Below Stairs, is the remarkable true story of an indomitable woman who, though she served in the great houses of England, never stopped aiming high. Powell first arrived at the servants' entrance of one of those great houses in the 1920s. As a kitchen maid - the lowest of the low - she entered an entirely new world; one of stoves to be blacked, vegetables to be scrubbed, mistresses to be appeased, and bootlaces to be ironed.

Young, brazen, beautiful, and unapologetically brilliant, Margaret Fuller accepts an invitation from Ralph Waldo Emerson, the celebrated Sage of Concord, to meet his coterie of enlightened friends. There she becomes “the radiant genius and fiery heart” of the Transcendentalists, a role model to a young Louisa May Alcott, an inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne and the scandalous Scarlet Letter, a friend to Henry David Thoreau as he ventures out to Walden Pond . . . and a muse to Emerson. But Margaret craves more than poetry and interpersonal drama.

Where is the sixth star?
It could hardly be better. I enjoyed every stuck up comment, every review of class, every description of the lost homes of the lost class. There really was a time when money was not the only determinant in life. Of course it has never been unimportant to anytime or person, but it must have been great when it wasn't the only criteria of worth. The story is unlikely but truly both romantic and fun. Again its nice to see that likelihood is not the only criteria of interest in a work of fiction.

Excellent in every way. Thought provoking.
Would you listen to Past Imperfect again? Why?
The observations and emotional reactions in this book were so unusually perceptive I found myself thinking about them for a long time afterwards. In very few words Julian Fellowes was able to create fully-realized personalities so clearly in my mind's eye. His insights about women were especially striking, I'm surprised that a man could be capable of seeing so much. On a basic level, this book is about meeting up with friends again after many years. Each time the narrator began privately mused about the differences between the young friend he remembered and the old friend standing in front of him, I braced myself for cruelty. But instead the assessments were considerate and thought provoking. It actually made me feel better about getting older somehow.

Not a book I'd typically choose, but glad I did.
I bought this either during a special sale or the daily deal. Normally I like Fantasy lit involving some sort of supernatural entity or a dark intriguing mystery.
This was a bit of mystery and intrigue. Hearing an honest and sober description of the 1960's British aristocracy was fascinating. I couldn't put it down.

Snobby Aristocrats Have Endless Existential Angst
I wanted to love this book since I love Julian Fellowes' dramatic works but it just didn't have me hanging on the edge of my seat, or even luxuriating in the gorgeous prose. Perhaps it was that the snobbery of these characters became repellent after a while. What is terrifying, pray tell, about carrots cut into rosettes? The ease with which these aristos carve up society into social strata and jockey about to solidify their position at the top, more or less, of that pile is nauseating. It makes me really glad that way of life has fallen away and that the strata are getting all jumbled.
Maybe that was what the book was trying to convey but it made me hate these people after a while.
And while the narrator's lilting upper-crusty accent was a pleasure to hear, he pronounced L.A.X. (the airport) as "lax" and A/K/A as "acka". Is this an upper-crusty British accent "thing"? Regardless, it totally took me out of the story.
I guess I'll stick to watching Mr. Fellowes' characters on the telly since that way I don't have to listen to quite so much of their snobby internal monologue.

Enjoyable.
It's not a masterpiece but it is a decent novel, with some great moments, and very strong descriptions of historical periods, social situations, and bygone days (I, for obvious chronological and biographical reasons, am very familiar with).
I had previously listened to "Snobs" by Fellowes and I had loved it. This one is not as good but totally worth the time/money anyhow, I truly enjoyed it.

A Glittering Journey through Ballrooms & Decades
If you could sum up Past Imperfect in three words, what would they be?
Glittering, Tempestuous, Sad
Who was your favorite character and why?
OH probably the main character. He was so hapless. He couldn't catch a break. Made my heart break for him a bit.
Which scene was your favorite?
The dinner scene in Portugal - because you'd be hearing about it all book and it finally came out!

The narrator is unbelievably great. His voice, his inflection, it is English spoken that is as beautiful as music.
This book was wonderful. I loved it so much because of the narrator. The content is so clever, hysterically funny in a marvelously sarcastic way, yet it is so clever. Julian Fellows is a genius writer. So very rare to hear his twists of phrase and how he so cleverly expresses an era and culture known to few. This book is a masterpiece.

Past Imperfect
It's a fun commentary on English society. Great "types." The reader's voice and accent add to the reading; mispronunciations are at a minimum.
Worth the listen.
