About this listen

New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins makes her Simon & Schuster Audio debut with the young adult novel, Perfect.

Everyone has something, someone, somewhere else that they’d rather be. For four high-school seniors, their goals of perfection are just as different as the paths they take to get there.

Cara’s parents’ unrealistic expectations have already sent her twin brother spiraling toward suicide. For her, “perfect” means rejecting their ideals to take a chance on a new kind of love. Kendra covets the perfect face and body - no matter what surgeries and drugs she needs to get there. Sean will sacrifice more than he can ever win back in order to score his perfect home run - on the field and off. And Andre realizes that to follow his heart and achieve his perfect performance, he’ll be living a life his ancestors would never understand.

A riveting and startling companion to the best-selling Impulse, Ellen Hopkins’s Perfect exposes the harsh truths about what it takes to grow up - and grow into our own selves. Because everyone wants to be perfect, but when perfection loses its meaning, how far will you go?

One of my favorites
I loved the multiple characters, voices are amazing. Wasn't hard to finish, it all connected the different stories, with an amazing truth at the end

Great but...

Ellen Hopkins is a fantastic story teller and really connects you to the characters in her books. This is a great addition Impulse as it shows insight into the family dynamics with Conner and a lot of different type of social pressures for teens. the caveat being, if you are triggered by domestic/sexual violence. DO NOT read/listen to this book. There are multiple stories entangled in these themes in here. Other than that, almost poetic. loved it.

Emotional

this is the first book in a long time to actually make me cry. The very end scene where it tied in Vanessa and Tony, and to hear their final words about Connor, really hit me hard. They were built very well as characters in the book prior to this, "Impulse", and then to tie them into this, with all the other very well built characters, it's emotional. Ellen Hopkins is an amazing auther and I recommend all the other books she has written, as she knows how to A.) Make characters real and B.) how to really give a deep insight to the human mind. I know personally how depression is, and my mind felt very similar to how Vanessa explained in Impulse. All in all, a great author if you can handle a graphic nature and touchy subjects.

The way Hopkins captures the essence of what it’s like to struggle with mental disorders is beautiful.

Andre’s perspective seemed unnecessary to me. 4 different perspectives made the story sometimes hard to follow.
