Publisher's summary

Meet Rook. A middle-aged philosophy professor with a sarcastic sense of humour, an ongoing rivalry with his highly-strung colleague Jeremy, and a rocky relationship with his ex-wife. But he has far more pressing matters to attend to than domestic disputes and academic feuds. He moonlights as a private investigator.

Armed with a quick, inquisitive mind, an arsenal of philosophic quotations and an addiction to fear, he is willing to embroil himself in any sticky situation which comes his way. His latest assignment involves the Steele family - a set of notorious criminal gangsters. Coming from a world of underhand dealings they do not want to get the police involved when a member of the family is murdered. So they turn to Rook.

Will his philosophical investigations get to the heart of the matter and solve the case? Or will their dark and dangerous world prove too hard to crack?

Steve Attridge is an award-winning screen writer and novelist. His television dramas include Hawkins and The Boot Street Band and his other books include Waking Dreams, Behind Closed Doors and Bottom of the List.

Hysterical

1st Timer here! I just loved the art of malice, ego and self depreciation. A lighthearted, mean story. I laughed thru much of it!!

Twist

Rook is not your stereotypical PI, and I liked it. Would definitely like to get to know him and his past.

Dark, tight, and wicked fun!

Any additional comments?

This is another book that had me from the first paragraph. Not so much for plot twists and turns, but for the Chandleresque character studies and moral dilemmas in the plot. Loved the struggle between the protagonist and his head of department and the outcome of that subplot. Made me laugh!

LOVE this character!

I just love this irreverent self (& everyone else)-deprecating character. His is a unique find for me. That combo, in play with his intelligence & dry wit, is the stuff that makes one spray whatever they're sipping without notice. He's one who can blatantly insult another in fine detail & leave them wondering what he just said & how they should take it... if it doesn't go completely over their head. Add the dichotomy of the coward thrilled by danger and interactions with those at their wit's end with his aloof impertinence.... What an incredible find for me!

Awesome!

I’d had no idea what to expect from Philosophical Investigations. Really, how does one approach a mystery from a philosophical perspective, lol? I loved it! The character was interesting, in his love/hate or love-to-hate personal relationships, as well as how he interacts with dangerous situations. Amusing, good mystery, great narrator!

Audible- give us the rest of the books!

I love British whodunnits; this is one reason why!

First of all, I paid $0 as it was in the Audible Plus catalogue. “Philosophical Investigations” is a mystery about a nefarious family dealing with the sudden deaths of loved ones.” The plot and characterizations were deliciously unique. My second listen by Steve Attridge and Michael Fenton Stevens, I can only hope that Audible will make the rest of the Paul Rook series available. An addictive listen and unique investigation into the family tragedy, Attridge and Steven’s grabbed me and held never let go through the five-plus hour mystery. Stevens’ brilliant portrayal of eccentric and clever Paul Rook was spot-on. He proved his narrative talent with each and every character’s varying dialects. As serious as this case may be, there are some welcome laugh-out-loud moments. At a little more than five hours, I had hoped for more. I am craving other complexellent adventures with Paul Rook. (Stevens’ narration is a must; I can think of no other to bring these oddly entertaining characters to vivid life.) Highly recommended. May we have more please? Bravo to all involved in bringing this remarkably unpredictable series to Audible! A sincere thank you. Epic, I say! EPIC! EPIC! EPIC!

Finally, something witty & funny in Audible Plus

I often struggle with British humour but given the reviews thought I would give this one a go... so happy I did.
I just wish there were more available like this one.
Thanks Audible Plus!
