Publisher's summary

Barbara, a young American woman teaching at a Tokyo university, inherits an amazing gift: a tansu box containing bottles of plum wine wrapped in paper covered with beautiful calligraphy. There is one bottle for each of the past 20 years of her surrogate mother's life. But why were these odd memoirs left to Barbara, who cannot read Japanese?

Set in 1960s Japan, Plum Wine is a powerful tale about cultural differences, romantic hardships, and the legacy of Hiroshima.

Critic reviews

"Davis-Gardner's exceptionally sensitive and enveloping novel illuminates with quiet intensity, psychological suspense, and narrative grace the obdurate divide between cultures." ( Booklist)

Warm reading of strong book

I've enjoyably listened to this twice over the past year. The reader Linda Stevens brings much warmth and wisdom to the book, and releases the story's strength. It's a slow moving story of women and eventually men, and misunderstandings.
