Publisher's summary

Set in the wilds of Maine, this is an explosive tale of an estranged son thrust into the hunt for a murderous fugitive - his own father. Game warden Mike Bowditch returns home one evening to find an alarming voice from the past on his answering machine: his father, Jack, a hard-drinking womanizer who makes his living poaching illegal game. An even more frightening call comes the next morning from the police: They are searching for the man who killed a beloved local cop the night before - and his father is their prime suspect. Jack has escaped from police custody, and only Mike believes that his tormented father might not be guilty. Now, alienated from the woman he loves, shunned by colleagues who have no sympathy for the suspected cop killer, Mike must come to terms with his haunted past. He knows firsthand Jack's brutality, but is the man capable of murder? Desperate and alone, Mike strikes up an uneasy alliance with a retired warden pilot, and together the two men journey deep into the Maine wilderness in search of a runaway fugitive. There they meet a beautiful woman who claims to be Jack's mistress but who seems to be guarding a more dangerous secret. The only way for Mike to save his father now is to find the real killer - which could mean putting everyone he loves in the line of fire. The Poacher's Son is a sterling debut of literary suspense. Taut and engrossing, it represents the first in a series by Paul Doiron featuring Mike Bowditch.

What is a Maine accent!

I'm from Arkansas and not many readers do southern like a true southerner. The accent isn't the story, just a part of it. I don't understand people who get hung up on narrators and lose the thrust of the story! I liked this one. I like Mike and I was just as hurt as he was when he was trying to defend his father and others were running him down. I like the warden pilot and his wife too. Nicely done author and narrator. I will continue with these stories and couldn't care less if the narrator sounds like he is from 'Maine'. I applaud narrators for the ability to read out loud for a living!! What could be better than that?!

This captures the Maine experience

I was born and raised in Maine. Having spent a lot of time in the areas where this story took place, the places and people were so accurate! It was a GREAT book and I am now going to read every single book by this author. My only “complaint” is that if someone is going to read a Maine book in a Maine accent, please find a Maine reader; make it legit. It was painful to listen to the mispronunciations but don’t let that stop you from choosing this book.

Too slow

I was hopeful when I got this book. I love the. C. J. Box series Joe Picket, but this seemed an average attempt at copying the idea. I especially disliked the readers attempt at a Maine accent. Story moved very slow. Not sure if I will try the next one.

Great Maine Warden story

This was a great mystery, involving depictions of Maine and the Warden service that serves our great state. Particularly interesting is the true to life depiction of main characters that live in rural Maine and true to life friction of corporate growth vs environmental - natural wilderness living in Maine. Enjoyable! I'm going to read more in the series now.

Great Story but unnecessary sexual content

Great Story but unnecessarily detailed sexual content. That portion would have been better implied rather than explicit.

Hoped for more than it delivered

My first book by this author.
Enjoyed the narrator. Listened till the end of the book, hoping for a twist in the tale but was quite a predictable story line. Characters were lacking in depth. Only one entertaining character, Charlie, otherwise nothing worth noting. Not sure if I'd choose another story by this author if this is the best he can do.

Excellent 1st of series

Trying some 1st novels in series or stand-alones to see what some of these popular authors are like. This is very good with great details about nature & the wardens as well as the mystery. Better written than many popular authors who need an editor or style education. I would continue this as I’ve read starts of a few later novels in this series & they have intriguing openings.
