Historia
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

In the year 1740, Commodore (later Admiral) George Anson embarked on a voyage that would become one of the most famous exploits in British naval history. Sailing through poorly charted waters, Anson and his men encountered disaster, disease, and astonishing success. They circumnavigated the globe and seized a nearly incalculable sum of Spanish gold and silver, but only one of the five ships survived.

It is 1780, and 17-year-old Alan Lewrie is a brash, rebellious young libertine. So much so that his callous father believes a bit of naval discipline will turn the boy around. Fresh aboard the tall-masted Ariadne, Midshipman Lewrie heads for the war-torn Americas, finding - rather unexpectedly - that he is a born sailor, equally at home with the randy pleasures of the port and the raging battles on the high seas. But in a hail of cannonballs comes a bawdy surprise.

Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

It was an age of empire, an age of contrast, and an age of dramatic change - and one which would determine the destinies of nations as well as of men. Captain Philip Blackwood of the Royal Marines rejoins his ship, HMS Audacious, in August of 1850, anxious to get back into action. "Per Mare - Per Terram" is the marines' motto. In the torturous heat of Africa, where they are sent to stamp out the remaining strongholds of slavery, and later, in the bitter war of the Crimea, Philip Blackwood and his men learn to obey it without question.

The works of J.R.R. Tolkien are quite possibly the most widely read pieces of literature written in the 20th century. But as Professor Michael Drout illuminates in this engaging course of lectures, Tolkien's writings are built upon a centuries-old literary tradition that developed in Europe and is quite uniquely Western in its outlook and style. Drout explores how that tradition still resonates with us to this day, even if many Modernist critics would argue otherwise. He begins the course with the allegory of a tower....

The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

Alan Moore channels both the ecstatic visions of William Blake and the theoretical physics of Albert Einstein through the hardscrabble streets and alleys of his hometown of Northampton, UK. In the half a square mile of decay and demolition that was England's Saxon capital, eternity is loitering between the firetrap housing projects. Embedded in the grubby amber of the district's narrative, among its saints, kings, prostitutes, and derelicts, a different kind of human time is happening.

Best one in the series?
I have read all 20 books, and this one is essential fo the establishment of main plot branches. It is written in the fullness of O’Brien’s exquisite style, and leaves any reader, I should think, even one uninterested in seafaring, very impressed.

Great adventures and fun on land and sea!
It boggles my mind how someone who is so contemporary as O'Brian can write with a voice that is so true to the period, especially given the fact that sailing tall ships is essentially a lost art. I am also impressed at the scope of topics that he tackles, from sailing to music, to matters of the heart. Tull's narration is spot on, and adds so much to the joy of "reading" these Aubrey-Maturin books.

Even better than the first book!
Finally some female characters! And pretty good ones too. You get the sense P. O'B really challenged himself to make up for what the first book was lacking and perhaps brushed up in his Austin before writing this installment. We get to learn more of the mysterious doctor machurin and see a softer side of JA. Of course there is nautical adventure and historical detail aplenty. I really enjoyed this book, and am loving he series.

A terrific story of friendship, and sailing when Great Britain ruled the seas.
A terrific story of friendship, and sailing when England ruled the seas. Perfectly narrated by Patrick Tull. Historically true to the era, and seamanship. O'Brian's attention to detail of the tall ships of that time is well known and respected.
I'm a poor sleeper, and my nights are filled with these tales of "Lucky Jack" who is not always lucky in terms of finances, love, or the men he reports to at the Admiralty.

great writing and great reading
Tge 21 Aubrey-Maturin volumes by Patrick O'Brian may constitute the longest novel in the English language. Patrick Tull (RIP) loves the stories and the characters and gives each one his own unmistakable voice. In 30 years of listening to recorded books I've found nothing else that comes close.
