About this listen
Mavra Chang was once a master criminal, notorious throughout the galaxy. But for 11 long years she has been trapped in a nonhuman body on the Well World - the master control planet for the universe, where untold numbers of strange races exist, separated by barriers erected by the mysterious, vanished race that built the Well World billions of years ago.
Orbiting the planet is a planetoid concealing Obie, a supercomputer that could restore Mavra Chang to her original form - if she can reach it. Unfortunately, the only spaceship on the planet is hidden in the northern hemisphere, a place no living creature can survive. She soon learns that her enemies are plotting to eliminate her, steal the ship, and escape from the Well World…. But many others have planned her demise before, and Mavra Chang is still alive and well - which is more than can be said of those who once wished her ill.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping. Larry Niven's novel, Ringworld, is the winner of the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 1972 Ditmars, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction.

This is a spellbinding tale woven of equal parts epic and myth - with a liberal dash of hard science fiction. When a one-way time tunnel to Earth’s distant past, specifically six million B.C., was discovered by folks on the Galactic Milieu, every misfit for light-years around hurried to pass through it. Each sought his own brand of happiness. But none could have guessed what awaited them. Not even in a million years....

What happens to the would-be peacemakers when they find themselves in the middle of something else? Something dangerous, something highly advanced...and something familiar? Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Story
For millennia, the Weave, an alliance of species, have fought to resist the telepathic Amplitur, who strive to unite all self-aware life-forms in their great "Purpose." The Weave is slowly losing ground, but for both sides, warfare focuses more on outthinking and outmaneuvering your foe than destruction. In fact, most regard violence as hideously barbaric, and even the thought of harming another sentient being is beyond imagining.

Aliens are spying on Earth from one of the four worlds that make up the Warden Diamond. But it is impossible to send agents to any of the four worlds because of unique microscopic symbionts that make it impossible for visitors to leave the Diamond. Seeking a unique solution, each of the four worlds making up the Diamond is sent a person whose mind has been stripped of everything and who is now controlled by an agent of the Confederacy. Lilith is the first planet to be visited.

Any kind of death annuls everything except his present knowledge and returns him to the past. This is a good way to test all sorts of things. That is, it would be, if not for one little thing.... This loop has real lords and it's unlikely that they'll be happy to hear about an uninvited guest. And that isn't his only problem - all of his memories of the last year have simply disappeared, but the world around him has changed in the meantime.

Great series
I read these books in 1980 and loved them. I still love them 41 years later. They held up very well over time.

When Everything Goes Wrong ...
Reread after many years.
This completes the story begun in Exiles of the Well of Souls. what starts as a reasonably straightforward adventure turns into a comedy of errors, but one where the slapstick just isn't funny. everything that can go wrong, does, at the worst possible moment. Couple of interesting plot twists, and a pretty expected ending.

Definitely worth it
This series has been one of the most unique series I’ve ever listened to. Very different, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are well developed, the story line is well thought out, and the depth of the story is very good. It goes beyond just being a fantasy/scyfi story, but a deeper look into humanity with an alien twist.

Book 3 of Jack L. Chalker signature series.
All the Well World novels are brilliant. There is even one out there I haven't read yet. I'm looking forward to listening all the way through. "The Sea Is Full Of Stars," was the last one I knew about. (Many of these novels have been out of print for years.) Read Midnight first and be assured if you like it, you should keep going. Jack once told me he never wrote series, just really long novels that had to be broken up into pieces. Some of the Well World books are like that. If you have just discovered this series, keep going, it is wonderful to have them back in print, and in audio versions as well. I've read most of these several times and these audio books are fresh and new to me. I think Jack would be very pleased with them. (I'm a bit biased having known the author if you can't tell... His voice went silent way too early but he left a lasting legacy to the world.)

Release the Chalker Cut!
Wow!
QUEST FOR THE WELL OF SOULS was incredible!
But what we need is one volume that contains both EXILES and QUEST.
Yes, EXILES is a “self-contained” novel.
However, it has too much of a cliffhanger ending, which is not as satisfying without QUEST.
So, not only do I say these two books need to be read... They need to be read as one, complete volume!
Release the Chalker Cut, so to speak!!!

Really good, wish the story continued.
I enjoyed the book. It was a great twist on classic sci-fi and the plot was engaging and had some good twists. I just wish there were more of the books available on audiobook!
