About this listen

The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus' most inspiring and challenging description of the Christian counterculture. John Stott's teaching on this timeless text shows how its value system, ethical standard, religious devotion, and network of relationships clearly distinguish it from both the nominal church and the secular world.

In this volume, Stott's The Message of the Sermon on the Mount is condensed into brief readings, suitable for daily use, that take us passage by passage through the Scripture text. Including eight weekly studies for individuals or groups, this book covering Matthew 5-7 allows listeners to enjoy the riches of Stott's writings in a new, easy-to-understand format.

John Stott was one of the most beloved and masterful Bible teachers of the last 50 years. His books have sold in the millions. Christians on every continent have heard and read his instructive and inspiring expositions of Scripture.

The books in the Reading the Bible with John Stott series condense the essential message of Stott's teaching, largely drawn from his Bible Speaks Today volumes, and present it in a format suitable for daily listening. Questions at the end of each section make these books even more useful for individuals or groups.

The exposition of Jesus’s sermon on the mount

The more that I read from John Stott the more I appreciate his approach to the Scriptures. this is an excellent listen for anyone that needs a renewed. Look at Jesus‘s most famous sermon, but is often not looked at as a whole does a great job of culminating all the points that Jesus makes and is a powerful refreshing view for anyone who is familiar or unfamiliar with what Jesus teaches.

Best interpretation of the SOTM

At first I wasn’t sure about the voice but it actually added to the study. John Stott did an amazing job breaking down each scripture and giving a beautiful narrative of what Jesus meant. Love every minute. I also played it for my Bible discord group as a book study.

Excellent book on the Sermon on the Mount

I've always struggled with the Sermon on the Mount. At first glance it seems nice and uplifting. Then it seems insurmountable and disheartening. Then I get confused with how it fits in with salvation through faith alone vs good deeds. Then I start to not know what I'm supposed to think or do about it and usually put it down and have it worry at the back of my mind from time to time until I come back to it for another look. This book helps to bring the whole thing into focus. It goes through Matthew 5-7 verse by verse and offers explanations on Jesus's meaning and teachings throughout. It has definitely given me plenty to meditate on. I'm sure I will have to listen to it several times.

A Manifesto of the Christian Life

Thoughtful, thorough, and challenging. After listening to this, I bought John Stott's Bible study on the Sermon on the Mount. Are you really a Christian? Can you spot a wolf in sheep's clothing? Is the pastor you are listening to a false prophet? How can you be sure that you are not on the broad road that leads to destruction? Do you know how to specifically apply the Word of God to your life? This book should be in every Christian's library and read and loaned often.

Clean, Crisp Exposition

One of the deepest and searching sections of the Holy Scriptures is Christ Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.

Stott analyzes this Sermon’s topical sections and their respective verses in clean, crisp exposition. Listening feels as though the warm, gentle curator deeply personally familiar with the paintings in one of a museum’s most precious collections has taken you on a private tour along that hallowed corridor. You stop before a symbolic image where he then explains its meaning, not only exulting in the straightforwardness and simplicity of the painting’s symbolism but also pointing out to you implications of the image you yourself may never have realized; with a twinkling eye, then, he cups the back of your elbow and takes you on to the next piece. It rapidly becomes evident this curator also has an enduring relationship with the very Master whose paintings he is showing you, and on that Master’s behalf and with His authority the curator insists you must, as he the curator himself does, also obey and follow the commands the Master gave to all through His beautifully magnificent paintings.

[“One who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.” (John‬ ‭14‬:‭21‬)

“For this is loving God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬-‭5‬)

“Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.” (James‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬)

“I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you. In this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples. Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.” (John‬ ‭15‬:‭5‬-‭10‬)]

A quickly flying few hours to enjoy and apply.

Glory to our God always living and reigning!

Glory to Christ Jesus the Holy King!
