Many people have debated as to whether or not tithing is for today. In this series, we will review scriptures regarding tithing to determine whether of not tithing was before the law, during the law and / or after the law.

Scriptures in the Old and New Testament will be evaluated. Base your decision upon the written, Holy Word of the Gospel and not denominational doctrines, what you were taught as a child or about the money.

The foundational scripture is based upon Matthew 23:23 in the NKJV which states:

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. NKJV

    • Matthew 23:23 in the NLT states: "What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. 24 Blind guides! You strain your water so you won't accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel!

    • Matthew 23:23 in Today’s English version says, “These you should practice, without neglecting the others.” You should practice what? He didn’t say that’s silly, you don’t need to tithe off of every little thing, He didn’t say that’s silly. He said you should do it.”

    • Matthew 23:23 in The Living Bible states: :23 “Yes, you should tithe, but you shouldn't leave the more important things undone,” either.”

    • Luke 11:42 in the NKJV states: "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

In Part 2 we will evaluate the first time tithing was mentioned in the Bible and who receives the tithes.
