About this listen

In this eerie and suspenseful YA, a teen girl discovers what connects her to the hotel she calls home as horrifying visions lead her to the truth.

Nell Martin is moving again, this time to the Winslow Grand Hotel, built in 1878. As Nell is settling in, strange things begin to happen. Doors lock of their own accord, writing appears on bathroom walls - and most horrifying of all - visions of a dead boy permeate her waking life. Thinking it was her mind playing tricks on her, she soon finds the past and the present colliding as she learns horrific details of a murder that happened at the hotel in 1907 involving a girl named Lea.

Nell and a mysterious bellboy must relive that day in hopes of finally breaking a curse that imprisons them both. And Nell discovers what truly links her to the history of the Winslow Grand Hotel.

Loved the book.

I loved this book from page one! the author had a way of painting images in your mind and keeping you interested from start to finish. The only thing I am disappointed about is that it's over. This is definitely one of those books you miss when it's finished. It is well worth the listen/read!

swoon worthy love story

My heart ached for the ill fated lovers but the ending was nicely wrapped up and more than I could've hoped for. Several people complained about one of the narrator (Aurelia's probably) but I didn't have a problem with it. She was from a different time and her story had more urgency to it, so the dramatic voice was not so bad. Overall, great story.

Good story

This is a very good story. Had a little trouble figuring out what kind of story at first. I was surprised by how well it turned out in the end but happy with the end.

Random forgotten plot points

I really liked the book. Besides the one timeline basically being the plot of Titanic, which I really didn’t mind, and the fact that the other timelines were kinda ignored and kept a mystery, there was just one plot point that I just couldn’t understand. (Potential Spoiler, but not really) so they made a big deal about these roses in the garden that kept growing and growing and they couldn’t get them to stop growing. They made a big deal about trying to cut them down and how they were growing up the building, etc. but then they amount to nothing. There’s no reason given for why these magically resilient roses grow every 16 years. It kinda bugged me because why was so much time spent on these roses for no reason ??? It wasn’t the only random thing in there, but it seemed like the biggest.
Also there’s some inconsistencies about the ending but it is what it is. My next thing about it was there was zero explanation of why they were cursed. Who cursed them? When? Why? How? Didn’t really make much sense they were just super content with the fact that they were cursed.
And finally, I liked the narrators. Honestly I didn’t even initially realize that there was more than one. Yes Lea could be a tad whiny but I feel like that was just how the inner monologue of the character was.

Yes!

This was a well written story that kept me interested and paying attention from start to finish. The performance was flawless, overall I will recommend; in fact I recommend this book around chapter 21. This is not your average ghost story, for sure!

Great Story but....

I had a very difficult time listening to Lauren Ezzo. Eileen Stevens did a wonderful job, as always. Lauren Ezzo’s presentation almost made me stop listening. I am glad I stuck with it as eventually she was done narrating. If Eileen Stevens has narrated the whole book I would have given the performance 5 stars.

Reminds me a little of Titanic…

Great story line only enhanced by the dramatic narration of Eileen Stevens (or whomever it was reading the part of Aurelia/Leah). Leah reminds me of a more refined version of Anne of Green Gables with a tad more control over the words leaving her mouth, but not by much. Love characters and fun narration.
