Sinéad O'Connor
About this listen
From the acclaimed, controversial singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor comes a revelatory memoir of her fraught childhood, musical triumphs, fearless activism, and of the enduring power of song.
Blessed with a singular voice and a fiery temperament, Sinéad O’Connor rose to massive fame in the late 1980s and 1990s with a string of gold records. By the time she was 20, she was world famous - living a rock-star life out loud. From her trademark shaved head to her 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live when she tore up Pope John Paul II’s photograph, Sinéad has fascinated and outraged millions.
In Rememberings, O’Connor recounts her painful tale of growing up in Dublin in a dysfunctional, abusive household. Inspired by a brother’s Bob Dylan records, she escaped into music. She relates her early forays with local Irish bands; we see Sinéad completing her first album while eight months pregnant, hanging with Rastas in the East Village, and soaring to unimaginable popularity with her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2U”.
Intimate, replete with candid anecdotes and told in a singular form true to her unconventional career, Sinéad’s memoir is a remarkable chronicle of an enduring and influential artist.

“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

Lucinda Williams’s rise to fame was anything but easy. Raised in a working-class family in the Deep South, she moved from town to town each time her father—a poet, a textbook salesman, a professor, a lover of parties—got a new job, totaling twelve different places by the time she was eighteen. Her mother suffered from severe mental illness and was in and out of hospitals. And when Williams was about a year old, she had to have an emergency tracheotomy—an inauspicious start for a singing career. But she was also born a fighter, and she would develop a voice that has captivated millions.

Her mother suffered from severe mental illness and was in and out of hospitals. And when Williams was about a year old, she had to have an emergency tracheotomy—an inauspicious start for a singing career. I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Seriously the best book!
This book is heartfelt, meaningful, funny, spiritual and is absolutely the best autobiography I have ever read or listened to. Sinead O’Connor has done an amazing job going through her entire life and explaining everything from things that were previously unknown, explaining better things that we thought we knew like going into detail about just how brutal the child abuse she suffered was, and filling in gaps all of her life that she was not in the public. She also explains meaning of many of her songs. Whether you are a fan of Sinead or Connor or not her life is extremely interesting and to hear it told in her voice is wonderful this is a highly highly recommended book!!

“It been 7 hours and 15 second……. Of Honesty.
The damn shame of it all is the majority of people who were able to meet such a beautiful soul didn’t take the time to get to know such a beautiful and honest soul. And since her death “They” have all come out of the woodwork and say how amazing and iconic she was but wouldn’t lift a finger to help her in her time of need. A very thoughtful, traumatic, and endearing story of love, loss, abuse, and redemption. Pity another one has left us to soon with so much more to offer. Only now is the world ready to accept. Fantastic listen, and Sinead’s oration is both alive and ghostly. I highly recommend this biography.

Unapologetic (her) truth
I must confess I was Apprehensive about reading this book. I’m so grateful I fought through my doubts and enlightened myself. She has an almost child like view on the world and it certainly came through. I enjoyed the honesty of her relationship with various celebrities-good or indifferent. To her it doesn’t matter if you believe her or not. This is her story and she told to us on her terms. More, yes please!!!
