About this listen

Rickshaw Boy is the story of Xiangzi, an honest and serious country boy who works as a rickshaw puller in Beiping (Beijing). A man of simple needs whose greatest ambition is to one day own his own rickshaw, Xiangzi is nonetheless thwarted, time and again, in his attempts to improve his lot in life.

Rickshaw Boy is one of the most influential and popular works of 20th-century Chinese literature. It presents an unflinchingly honest portrait of life on the margins of society, intertwining dark comedy with tragedy in a searing indictment of the philosophy of individualism.

Underrated

I feel like people don’t understand that this is a tragedy?? Like the point is to show people how life is as a peasant, it’s realistic. If you want a happy ending go watch a Disney movie.

Does this guy ever get a break?

I don’t know who wrote four or five star ratings… There were no reviews when I began this book… I kept thinking there was a point to all of this naive rickshaw boy’s bad luck & suffering… One tragedy, one drama after another… I kept hoping for a happy ending or happy turn but no… None not even at the end. don’t waste your time! It’s not even worth being free!

Worst book ever

I have never in my life read a more boring book. This is my first book review but I hope it saves others the money and experience I had. Don’t read it.
