About this listen

Guilty of an indiscretion? Time to marry a werewolf.

New York Times best-selling author Gail Carriger brings you a charming stand-alone story set in her wildly popular Parasolverse. Described as: Georgette Heyer goes to the wolves.

Werewolves

The monsters left Faith ruined in the eyes of society, so now they're her only option. Rejected by her family, Faith crosses the Atlantic, looking for a marriage of convenience and revenge. But things are done differently in London. Werewolves are civilized. At least they pretend to be.

Americans

Backward heathens with no culture, Major Channing has never had time for any of them. But there's something special about Faith. Channing finds himself fighting to prove himself and defend his species. But this werewolf has good reason not to trust human women.

Even if they learn to love, can either of them forgive?

From the best-selling author of the Parasol Protectorate series. Look out for appearances from favorite characters and the serious consequences of unwarranted geology.

A Note on Chronology

The Claw & Courtship novellas can be heard in any order. This book can be enjoyed without having heard any of Gail's other works. Set in the spring of 1896, this story occurs after events chronicled in Romancing the Werewolf.

Clever regency romance

I love reading miss Carriger's Parasolverse novellas, it gives a greater depths to characters and there are gloriously small nods to the main series at times that make you go "ah".

As a standalone novella it is cute and with just enough backstory splashed in there for one to not be utterly confused about the characters or how the society functions.

There is one thing that bothered me enough to remember after finishing: the voiceovers that are meant to show that a character is thinking. There is no real consistency in how they are presented (sometimes a full sentence, sometimes the starting words, and at one point I believe it was a different voiceover than the actual thought), and the overlap in voicelines thoroughly pull me out of the 'verse and into my world.

However, that is not enough to mark the novella down, because it is, in itself, a joy to hear. I will moat definitely be listening to the other novellas as well.

Another great story about side characters

I have really enjoyed all the stuff Carriger has written, and having a book like this that fleshes out people other than the main characters is something I appreciate. This is another steamy romance style book, but with the perfect amount of mystery and intrigue to keep you in suspense as you wonder about people past and what may be coming in the future. If you have enjoyed the world that Carriger has made, you will love this book.

Narration true tpo stiury

When I read Gail Carrington before, this was the voice I heard. This seemed strange to me, since before I always heard me narrating everything I read. We laughed at the mannerisms that show how silly we can be in reacting to things out of out normal social settings and hope we have the wisdom face injustices with the grace that Faith does.

Narrator needs practice

I wish the narrator would have stuck with one american accent instead of wandering all over the dialetic country from word to word

Wonderful story! Poor narration.

This is such a sweet love story, about two broken people (well, one broken person and one broken werewolf) discovering love and how to be whole, together. Channing was introduced in “Changeless” in the Parasol Protectorate series, but Faith is a totally new character - an American (gasp!) who studies ROCKS (double gasp!). I very much enjoyed their courtship. Just lovely romance, that doesn’t get too saccharine. Great story!

BUT! The narration! Ugh. It’s bad enough that the narrator doesn’t know how to pronounce things from the “Parasolverse”, like B.U.R. (it’s *not* “brrr) or claviger (it’s a SOFT “g”), but she can’t even pronounce well-known words, such as “tonne” (it’s not “tone”), mores (as in “social mores), which she pronounced like the plural of “more”, with a single syllable, and “confidant” which she pronounced “confident”. I mean, REALLY!! Every time she mispronounced one of these words I was jolted out of the story. Honestly, I can’t recommend this audiobook, but I HIGHLY recommend the book itself.

Loved This

It has been a while since I enjoyed the Protectorate series and I was happy to be back in that world. Major Changing is a growly, reluctant suitor but he meets his match in Faith. She is a bit of an independent, strong American who had been rejected by her family and sent to London to capture a werewolf mate if she can.
The character interaction is fun especially with the secondary characters pushing things along.
I enjoyed when these two revealed their vulnerabilities and accepted each other's strengths.
I like this author and recommend her werewolf series for the light escape and romance they share.
Audio Notes: Emma Newman does a fine job with the narration. She gives each character their appropriate voice and personality. There are some 'thought asides' presented in a different tone, which I found acceptable once I realized what it was. I do recommend this as a fun audio experienced.

My favorite Gail Book

I have loved the Parasol Protectorate series and all the other books that have come with it. Imagine my surprise when I was casually reading this and fell madly in love. I then ran out and bought the audiobook and between the two I’ve listened/read at least 30 times in recent months. It’s just that good.
