The house was built in the Old Queen's time: built for an Elizabethan pirate who was knighted for the plunder he brought home. It survived many eras, many reigns: it saw the passing of Cromwell and the Civil War. It became rich with an Indian Nabob and poor with a 20th century innkeeper. It saw wars, and lovers, and death. Children were born there, both heirs and bastards. It had ghosts and legends and a history that grew stranger with every generation.

It's worked so well for generations, certainly one kiss with the delectable Livia Stuart isn't going to change things. Society dictates he marry her, and one chit is as good as another as long as she's from a decent family.

Once on board the vessel, Chelsea is intrigued by a fellow passenger, Quaid Tanner, who is returning to his vineyard in Australia. As much as Quaid admires the feisty, courageous Chelsea, circumstances seem destined to keep them apart.

Ross as Ross really is!
This is one of my favorite books, its like an old friend that you really enjoy spending time with. Masterpiece is wonderful, but you don't really get to know the real Ross as Winston Graham meant for us to meet. You really don't understand how much Ross loves Demelza until you take the time to read the book and how Ross sees her in his eyes. Oliver Hembrough does the most wonderful job of bringing all of the characters alive, he is my favorite narrator of all.
