Publisher's summary

This guide, written and narrated by developmental psychologist Dr Suzanne Zeedyk, introduces listeners to attachment - babies' innate need to know that someone will share their fears and joys. It uses the analogy of "Sabre Tooth Tigers and Teddy Bears" to make attachment theory understandable for everyone. As one of the quotes from the audiobook puts it: "People frequently ask how come no one tells them about this stuff? This is an attempt to do just that".

This is the second edition of the book, released in April 2020, and has been updated and revised since the first edition in 2013. The guide is written in a style suited to both personal and professional interests. Parents will find the information in it as relevant to their lives as do childcare staff, teachers, health visitors, business leaders and anyone else who works with people.

An excellent reflection of human connection

There is so much to learn from this book! Its synthesis of evolving studies and inevitable life experiences reflects the importance of the quality of attention we give — and have received — helping us understand the breadth and depths of the crucial impact of attachment and connection from our earliest days and throughout our lives. At a time when what shapes us individually -- and thus what shapes society -- has to be better understood, Developmental Psychologist Dr Suzanne Zeedyk takes on some of the traps we homo-sapiens unwittingly get ourselves into! For all its very accessible and applicable scholarly and scientific seriousness one might wonder at the title of Sabre Tooth Tigers & Teddy Bears! And yes, it is a book for children -- written on their behalf -- but primarily a deeply informed perspective for parents and for those who who care for, teach, and care about children. Nowadays, neuroscience mirrors much about understanding the roots of human nature and the inevitable effects we have upon each other as it is laid out here by Dr. Zeedyk. Particularly at this time of collective trauma and with all today's uncertainty, to have her informed explanations as a grounded and grounding guidepost — outlined in 13 chapters —the better it is for children, for the child in us all -- and for the future.
