About this listen
Fermentation and plant use - as medicine, as psychotropics, as teachers, as companions on life's path - are an inescapable part of our exploration of what it means to be human. Thus, this book conflicts with a number of popular beliefs about alcohol, plants, and the nature of material reality. It is, therefore, not politically correct.
The ancient beers, created...between 10,000 and 30,000 years ago, were quite different from what we know as beer today. Many were sacred beers..., and hundreds contained medicinal herbs. -From the book
The author's beautiful and provocative exploration of the sacredness and folklore of ancient fermentation is revealed through 200 plants and hive products. This book includes 120 recipes for ancient and indigenous beers and meads from 21 countries and six continents - and the most complete evaluation of honey ever published.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

A change as small as the position of an atom can lead to enormous alterations in the properties of a substance.

Story
Straightforward and opinionated, Short Course in Beer is designed to turn the novice beer lover into an expert imbiber and the casual drinker into an enthusiast. Readers will come to understand the beauty of beer and the sources of its flavor, as well as learn which beers are worth our time and which are not. With tongue in cheek, the author examines beer's historical connections to the Crusades, the Hundred Years' War, and modern-day soccer riots. He talks frankly (and joyfully) about the effects of alcohol on the body and brain, he defends beer from its enemies, and ushers it out of the frat house and into the dining room.

Story
What won't we try in our quest for perfect health, beauty, and the fountain of youth? Well, just imagine a time when doctors prescribed morphine for crying infants. When liquefied gold was touted as immortality in a glass. And when strychnine - yes, that strychnine, the one used in rat poison - was dosed like Viagra. Looking back with fascination, horror, and not a little dash of dark, knowing humor, Quackery recounts the lively, at times unbelievable, history of medical misfires and malpractices.

Wealth of herbal and beer info
Author covers a vast amount of recipes and herbs. The book includes herb uses, legends/myths of origin, and some of the chemical components. Take great notes or you’ll be rereading. The speaker is a bit monotonous at times, otherwise 10/10.

Not what I was expecting...
The first thing I noticed in the first few min was the misquotation of the Bible. There is no Ecclesiasties 38:4 Ecclisiasties only has 12 chapters. Most of this book was similarly written with primarily personal beliefs and mythical mumbo jumbo and little talk of actual science and wellness and usability. I want to be able to make and brew my own herbal beers or alcohols and I don't feel like this really helped me that much in a practical sense.
