Ludwig Kalisch war Gründer der Sonntagszeitung "Der Demokrat" und der Karnevalszeitschrift "Narrhalla", in welchen er Feudalismus und Zensur bekämpfte, was Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ein höchst gefährliches Unterfangen war. Nachdem er zum Tode verurteilt wurde, lebte und arbeitete er als Journalist in London und Paris. Seine Satiren spiegeln sehr aufschlussreich und humorvoll die autoritären Macht- und Gesellschaftsstrukturen einer Zeit dar, in welcher die freiheitliche Knospe der Demokratie in Europa begann zu versuchen sich langsam zu entfalten.
Der deutsche Magen und die deutsche Freiheit charakterisiert deutsche Verdauungs-Physiognomie und An die Eitelkeit bürgerliche Unterwürfigkeit gegenüber dem Staat. Erfindung der Prügelmaschine ist ein wissenschaftlicher Vortrag über Sinn und Notwendigkeit eines Züchtigungs-Apparates. In Schwermüthiger Brief der Sonne an den Mond beklagt diese die Sorglosigkeit und Dummheit der Menschen, worauf in Offenes Sendschreiben der Erde an die Sonne diese die Ansichten der Sonne zu mindesten teilweise relativiert. An dem Grabe eines seltenen Menschen ist der Abgesang auf ein tragisches Menschenschicksal. Die schlechten Dichter zeigt, dass alle Arten von Künstlern wichtig für jede Gesellschaft sind. Leben, Taten und Untergang des deutschen Junkers Balthasar Nix berichtet über einen vergnügungssüchtigen Taugenichts. An der Bare eines Höflings beweist, dass übermotiviertes Berufsethos zu Charakterverderbtheit führen kann. Der Satiren erster Teil.
