Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Story
For 30 years, Lynn Wilder, once a tenured faculty member at Brigham Young University, and her family lived in, loved, and promoted the Mormon Church. Then, their son Micah, serving his Mormon mission in Florida, had a revelation: God knew him personally. God loved him. And the Mormon Church did not offer the true gospel. As Lynn tells her story of abandoning the deception of Mormonism to receive God's grace, she gives a rare look into Mormon culture, what it means to grow up Mormon, and why the contrasts between Mormonism and Christianity make all the difference in the world.

In 2012, Mormon General Authority Marlin K. Jensen acknowledged that members are leaving the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints "in droves". Access to the internet is often credited and blamed for this mass exodus, where members learn about problematic doctrines and cover-ups of LDS history. Many are happy as Mormons. And many are not. Those who leave, and those doubters who stay face struggles that few others can understand.

When Candice Curry was a little girl, she put her hand in her father's back pocket so that she wouldn't get lost in large crowds. Little did she know that as she followed him, he was plying his trade: conning people. Her family drove stolen cars, lived in stolen houses, and shopped with stolen credit cards. Drug use was regular, as were visits from strange people who were trying to track her father down. Though she eventually cut ties with her father, Candice could not ignore the scars that were left from her childhood.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Publisher's summary
Days after Alex Cooper told her parents she was gay, they drove Alex from their home in Southern California to Utah, where they signed over guardianship to fellow Mormons who promised to save Alex from her homosexuality.
For eight harrowing months, Alex was held captive in an unlicensed "residential treatment program" modeled on the many "therapeutic" boot camps scattered across Utah. Alex was physically and verbally abused and forced to stand facing a wall for up to 18 hours a day wearing a heavy backpack full of rocks. "God's plan does not apply to gay people," her captors told her, using faith to punish and terrorize her. With the help of a dedicated legal team in Salt Lake City, Alex would eventually escape and make legal history in Utah by winning the right to live under the law's protection as an openly gay teenager.
Saving Alex is a horrific yet uplifting story of identity, faith, courage, acceptance, and freedom that reveals what happens when religion goes too far and how a group of dedicated Americans and one young woman fought for her rights, including finding the strength and courage to be herself, and how her story has inspired countless others along the way.

In September 2007, Elissa Wall, the star witness against polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs, gave captivating testimony of how Jeffs forced her to marry her first cousin at age 14. This harrowing account proved to be the most compelling evidence against Jeffs, showing the harsh realities of this closed community and the lengths to which Jeffs went in order to control the sect's women. Now, in this courageous memoir, Wall tells the incredible story of how she emerged from the confines of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints and helped bring one of America's most notorious criminals to justice.

He also declared that science would make the “remote reaches of the mind accessible” and cure psychiatric illness with breakthrough medications. We were walking on the moon within the decade. But today, psychiatric cures continue to elude us—as does the mind itself. Why is it that we still don’t understand how the mind works? What is the difference between the mind and the brain? And given all that we still don’t know, how can we make insightful, transformative choices about our psychiatric conditions?

Awesome memoir
It was an amazing story read with emotion! I felt extremely emotional as if I were the one experiencing the pain Alex went through. I did not tell anyone my sexual orientation until I was in my 20s and as a Christian, I went through people who turned their back to me. I’m so glad I bought this audio book

Harrowing
Would you listen to Saving Alex again? Why?
This is a very harrowing story, one that "reads" like a suspense novel.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Alex, for her determination and sense of self.
Which character – as performed by Luci Christian Bell – was your favorite?
Alex and her lawyer. Both great-- and real, obviously-- characters.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Alex's parents yelling at her to get out of the house when she came out as gay.
Any additional comments?

Sad Story
Some people just should not procreate. It’s shocking that they sent their child to live with strangers who were not licensed, and they didn’t even do a background check on the family. I’m surprised she was allowed to go back into that toxic environment with her homophobic parents. I am glad that Alex is doing well, and I know she’s helped a lot of kids who think they are less than.

Crazy story, great reader...
Hard to believe this horrible treatment is still happening to this community! Good for her in having the courage to take a stand for herself at such a young age.

Gives Me Hope
This story about Alex Cooper’s bravery at the tender age of 15 years old breaks my heart and heals it simultaneously. This book is incredible for anyone looking to educate themselves on the reality that LGBT kids STILL face today, even in 2020 (there are STILL many “treatment” centers in the country). The narrator is great, and somehow manages to individualize character voices without it sounding goofy. 5 stars all around!

Just WOW!
i listened to this in one day. The story is well written. The narrator does an amazing job of expressing the emotions. I cried. Then I went upstate at 1:00 AM to tell my kids that I love them - especially my 15 year old daughter who has an amazing girlfriend and was never afraid to tell us that she likes girls.
