Both science and the Bible show us that the most important thing we can provide for our kids is a place of emotional safety. In other words, the posture from which we parent matters infinitely more than the techniques of parenting. Emotional safety - more than any other factor - is scientifically linked to raising kids who live, love, and lead well.

We have a tendency today to over-parent, micromanage, and underappreciate our adolescents. Dr. John Duffy's The Available Parent is a revolutionary approach to taking care of teens and tweens. The available parent of a teenager is open to discussion, offering advice and solutions but not insisting on them. He allows his child to make some mistakes, setting limits, primarily where health and safety are concerned. He never lectures - he is available but not controlling. He is neither cruel nor dismissive, ever....

Dead cats. That's the image many people conjure up when you mention curiosity. An image perpetuated by a dusty old proverb that has long represented the extent of our understanding of the term. This book might not put the proverb to rest, but it will flip it upside down: far from killing anything, curiosity breathes new life into almost everything it touches.

You don't have to be controlled by difficult people! Strange as it may seem, other people are not nearly as committed to our happiness as we are. In fact, sometimes it seems like they’re on a mission to make us miserable! There’s always that one person. The one who hijacks our emotions. The one who seems to thrive on drama. If we could just “fix” that person, everything would be better. But we can’t fix other people. We can only make choices about ourselves.

Love this book!
This book gives parents practical how-to advice about navigating not only technology with your family, but also relationships. Kathy shares her knowledge of what our kids are struggling with in our culture and in our family life. Kathy keeps it real and doable. The audio book worked great for me especially since the written resources are available on the website! I'm definitely sharing this book with our family and friends.

Not just about screens.
This was very insightful. it does a great job of Biblically identifying lies and countering them with truths. This helped me get a greater understanding of my children's mind sets and world views by giving behavioral examples and remedies.
One point of contention I had was with the drop out rate statistics. My experience and those who I work with is: College is no longer worth the money spent. MANY drop out because of this realization. Same with High School. I have mentored many High School and College drop outs in Machine Shops who went on to make more money than I do.
I encourage you to listen and take notes!

Amazing insight on what teens want and need
The author has great Biblical insight on what teens want and need from screens. How are are they being confused by social media? How are we missing out by using screens? What could we be gaining? How can contracts with teens hinder their personal development?

MUST READ
I could not stop agreeing with everything Kathy Koch said from beginning to end. So many thoughts, words and ideas I could not articulate myself but felt. I also love how Kathy doesn’t just state the negatives of screens but the positives, which in honesty I didn’t even see. My teen is 13 now. I should have read/ heard this when he turned 11. My life wouldn’t have been so rough the past couple of years.
