Publisher's summary

The series takes place in a world similar to our own but one where vampires, witches, werewolves and shape-shifters live among humans without their knowledge. These supernatural races make up a secret society known as the Night World, which enforces two fundamental laws to prevent discovery: (1) Never allow humans to gain knowledge of the Night World's existence and (2) Never fall in love with one of them.

In Secret Vampire, Poppy thought the summer would last forever. Then she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Now Poppy's only hope for survival is James, her friend and secret love. A vampire in the Night World, James can make Poppy immortal. But first they both must risk everything to go against the laws of Night World.

Great story. Better if it was dramatized.

The narration was okay, nothing special. Will listen to it again in the near future.

Decent

The narrator, Ellen Grafton, had a good voice for Poppy, the main character. Unfortunately her male voices leave a lot to be desired. The story itself is okay, but not as good as others in the series. A decent little setup story.

Is there no one to direct these narrators?

I read these back in high school (13+ years ago) and I loved them. Figured I would download the audiobooks so I can listen while I drive or work. While I’m enjoying the story all over again, I can’t help but be annoyed that this poor girl narrating it can’t seem to pronounce some names or words and she sounds like a 10yo making up voices for her dolls. I run into this issue with many audiobooks, narrators seem to not know how to pronounce words and there appears to be no one to help them out.

True to YA I Suppose

I read this whole series in high school. Now as a 26 year old, I wanted to revisit the books while working. Unfortunately, I think to appeal to teenagers, it is read by a woman or young lady with a very youthful voice. It was off putting, but that’s on me. I still love the books and the stories, but will just buy the physical books for my personal physical library.

How much it reminded me of Damon and the author's later works.

I did have a lot of fun revisiting an old high school love and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

It is a young adult novel.

Would you try another book from L. J. Smith and/or Ellen Grafton?

I love LJ Smith's novels! Ellen Grafton gave a spectacular performance I give her 5 stars!! So yes on both!

If you’ve listened to books by L. J. Smith before, how does this one compare?

This is the first book of the Night World series, so it's a little different from the rest of the stories. Over all I have to say that Smith did a wonderful job in this book introducing us to Night World through James and Poppy.

What about Ellen Grafton’s performance did you like?

Ellen Grafton was fantastic! She gave each character depth and truely gave Poppy a young vital spirit in her performance.

Do you think Night World: Secret Vampire needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes. And again this is the first book of the series but the las time you really hear about James and Poppy alone.

Any additional comments?

Lets remember that this is a young adult novel, so if you are looking for a mature story line or a more intimate relationship between the charecters, it's just not going to happen here. If you are a young adult reading these books I would say welcome to the nightworld your mind is about to be blown away! If you are an adult reading this series I would say: Just enjoy the journey.

love the books HATE the narrator

This book is absolutely worth buying and reading! The whole night world series is despite LJ completely abandoning Strange Fate. I'm disappointed with the way the narrator sounds. Her voice is awful like it is coming from a tin can.
