Publisher's summary

Winter, 1364.

The King is dead.

Defeated on the field of Poitiers, Jean Le Bon, King of France, honored his treaty with England until his death. His son and heir, Charles V, has no intention of doing the same. War is coming and the predators are circling.

Sir Thomas Blackstone, Edward III's Master of War, has been tasked with securing Brittany for England. In the throes of battle, he rescues a young boy, sole witness to the final living breaths of the Queen of Castile. The secret the boy carries is a spark deadly enough to ignite conflict on a new front-a front the English cannot afford to fight on.

So Blackstone is ordered south to Castile, across the mountains to shepherd Don Pedro, King of Castile, to safety. Accompanied only by a small detachment of his men and a band of Moorish cavalrymen loyal to the king, every step takes Blackstone further into uncertain territory, deeper into an unyielding snare.

For the Master of War, the shadow of death is always present.

Just Keeps Getting Better!

This is some fine writing. Storytelling at its best. Each book is better than the last one. Can’t wait for the next one in February. Written by an amazing author who knows how to spin a yarn. Each character is so fully flushed out. Couldn’t be more amazing. LOVE… LOVE… L-O-V-E this series!!!!! So glad I found it :)

Once again a great book, maybe my favorite of them thus far. I hope this is not the last.

Much better narration

This is an incredible series, one of the best Middle Ages novels out there. Great principal character, excellent supporting characters and full of blood and battle. When’s the next one?!

Another Great Addition to the Series

This is by far one of my favorite historical fiction series. Blackstone is a well developed character who has a company of colorful companions to accompany him on his adventures. David Gilman also does us a favor by creating the most unlikeable villains I have come across. After each novel, I ask myself how the next antagonist can be more or equally as unlikable as the last and each time my question is answered with a, “this is how!”

Another great novel to this amazing series.

All of the Thomas Blackstone novels have been 5 stars. This newest one does not disappoint. I do enjoy Gildart Jackson’s narration.

Much better Gildart Jackson back as the narrator!

I've enjoyed the series from beginning to end. The only disappointment was when this title was first released with a different narrator. I got through it and decided to stop listening to the series. I was pleasantly surprised to see it released again with the original narrator. Enjoyed it! Now I'm looking forward to the next one.

Maybe his best

The story and narration were the highest quality of any of this authors books that I have listened to. Now I need the next in the series.

Please don't ruin this MC

I have listened to this series since I found it and have been hooked, but this last book making Blackstone seem like an idiot is too much. Please don't make him into some lone hero who needs to go off on his own and do it all alone because this will end the listener's interest. I don't like how Blackstone went off when he could've taken even two of his guys with him or even his squire, but to go in alone was just nonsense. This series has been very reasonable and rational for the most part, don't go making it into something else or I can say for me at least I will be out. Blackstone always stacks the deck in his favor, keep it that way because that's how reality works.
