Publisher's summary

A compulsive debut thriller about motherhood, obsession, and how far we’d go to protect the ones we love

Five-year-old Ava Boone vanished without a trace six months ago. No witnesses, no sightings or arrests. But Grace Wright just moved in next door to the only suspect the case had: quiet, middle-aged Leland Ernest.

Recently divorced, Grace uprooted her two small children to start again and hopes the move will reset her crippling insomnia. With whispered neighborhood gossip and increasingly sleepless nights, Grace develops a fierce obsession with Leland and the safety of her children. Could she really be living next door to a child-kidnapper? A murderer?

With reality and dream blurring more each day, Grace desperately pursues the truth - following Ava’s family, demanding answers from the police - and then a body is discovered.

Brilliant!!!!!

The author of the novel Sharon Doering is absolutely brilliant with this one. It’s the first I’ve listened to on Audible and have feel in love with her talent…. She Lies Close kept me on the edge of complete suspense the entire listen. Highly recommended. It is a little gory at times but well worth the read/listen. And the narrator did an amazing job with with the story telling. I love when authors have no filter and write what they really want to say without worrying about offending anyone with language. It’s great!!!!

Slow Start but Fun Ride

I had some difficulty getting into the story and almost gave up but I am glad I stuck with it.
I really enjoyed and could relate to the inner dialogue and downward spirl.

I liked it

Thoughtful, funny at times, and with a nuanced message that gave this a bit of depth. Well worth reading!

Too long

Took way to long to get to the end. Almost lost interest. Think it would have been just as good in a shorter version. Got tired of the main characters paranoia.

The most realistic portrayal of motherhood

"Will everyone please just fuck off a little?"

Every mother has thought this when you have one kid crying, one kid following you into the bathroom, and hear, from down the hall, the dog throwing up on the rug. Sharon Doering's narrator, Grace, is every modern mother, struggling, sweaty, unshaved, trying to make it through the day. Her nights are riddled with media-driven anxiety that hums under our skin: sensationalized claims over what new study is telling us how our kids will die this week.

I laughed out loud in solidarity multiple times through this book. The well-done thriller with its unexpected conclusion is truly the icing on this cake you eat in the closet to hide from your kids.

It's OK and in the Plus Catalog

It kept my attention while I did housework. I loved the sarcasm of the main character. Her memory loss was a tad unbelievable. It's free and interesting but not earth shattering. For free, recommend it.

Really liked the storyline

Easy listen and was not the run of the mill storyline. The narration was easy to get lost in the storytelling.

riveting

A tense psychological thriller that will pull you in with tension and keep you guessing. I did not see the twisted ending coming. Some have accurately described it as Hitchcock-ian. Reading other reviews, seems some are offended by the sometimes colorful language..but honestly it totally fits with the character and it not even the least bit gratuitous or offensive.
I will not say it was my most favorite listen but probably in my top ten. The performance was stellar. I understand the author's next book is even better. I am a Sharon Doering fan now.

It’s okay

The voice actor did great. I will have to look out for other things she reads. Every once and a while the audio messed up. Not to the point it was annoying, but just once in a while. The novel it self was alright. I didn’t care much for the main character. She came off as holier than thou, and it was annoying at times. I like when an author brings inner thoughts into the novel, but it was a bit too much for me. I think the story at times was slow. Didn’t keep me engaged and wanting more all the time. The climax was just kind of underwhelming but had great potential.
