Story
Paksenarrion was the finest paladin her world would ever see. But Paksenarrion could never have become a fighter at all had it not been for he who had come before: Gird, the liberator, who taught his people that they could fight - and win - against their Mage-born rulers. And after Gird came one more: Luap, Gird's sworn follower and the king's half-breed bastard. Riven by internal conflict, Luap dare not lie and cannot tell the truth, nor face the future.

Story
Kylara Vatta is the only daughter in a family full of sons, and her father's only child to buck tradition by choosing a military career instead of joining the family business. For Ky, it's no contest: Even running the prestigious Vatta Transport Ltd. shipping concern can't hold a candle to shipping out as an officer aboard an interstellar cruiser. It's adventure, not commerce, that stirs her soul. And despite her family's misgivings, there can be no doubt that a Vatta in the service will prove a valuable asset. But with a single error in judgment, it all comes crumbling down.

Story
Sassinak was 12 when the raiders came. That made her just the right age: old enough to be used, young enough to be broken. Or so the slavers thought. But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Maybe it was her unusual physical strength. Maybe it was her friendship with the captured Fleet crewman. Maybe it was her spirit. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. She bided her time, watched for her moment. Finally it came, and she escaped. But that was only the beginning for Sassinak.

Story
The small island of Malaz and its city gave the great empire its name, but now it is little more than a sleepy, backwater port. Tonight, however, things are different. Tonight the city is on edge, a hive of hurried, sometimes violent activity; its citizens bustle about, barring doors, shuttering windows, avoiding any stranger's stare. Because tonight there is to be a convergence, the once-in-a-generation appearance of a Shadow Moon - an occasion that threatens the good people of Malaz with demon hounds and other, darker things....

In 1437, the Lancaster king Henry VI ascends the throne of England after years of semi-peaceful regency. Named "The Lamb," Henry is famed more for his gentle and pious nature than his father's famous battlefield exploits; already, his dependence on his closest men has stirred whispers of weakness at court. In a land haunted by the legacy of dead dragons, Rowen Locke has been many things: orphan, gravedigger, mercenary. All he ever wanted was to become a Knight of Crane and wield a kingsteel sword against the kind of grown horrors his childhood knows all too well. Story
Their peace was a fragile thing, but it had endured for seven years, mostly because the people of Darassus and the king of the Naor hordes believed his doom was foretold upon the edge of the great sword hung in the hall of champions. Unruly Naor clans might raid across the border, but the king himself would never lead his people to war so long as the blade remained in the hands of his enemies. But when squire Elenai’s aging uncovers evidence that the sword in their hall is a forgery, she’s forced to flee Darassus for her life, her only ally the reckless, disillusioned Kyrkenall.

Weird inflection
I have loved this story for years but the narrator's choices in inflection are so odd that I find it incredibly hard to listen to. If you have the chance to read this story, I highly recommend it. If your only option is to listen to this narration, you may find other stores more enjoyable.

Doesn't get much better than this.
What did you love best about Sheepfarmer’s Daughter?
The Way Elizabeth Moon developed Paksenarrion and how Jennifer Van Dyck brought her to life. I have previously read this series and loved it, now I love it even more.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Paksenarrion of Course!!!
Have you listened to any of Jennifer Van Dyck’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I havn't, but I'm gonna look for her now:)
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book is the begining of a wonderful journey, held me spellbound and made it hard for me to want to get anything else done.
Any additional comments?

Ye Be a long Tale
This started of very well I enjoyed the first half a lot the attention to detail is insane I could smell the wet mud and fell the chill in the air, Hats very much of to the narrator there is a telephone book of characters in this book and she gives every one a personality.
Pox as she is come to been know as you go though is a solider and nothing more really, the story goes of on weird tangents that seem to want to go some where but never do.Maybe in the next books thous tangents will make sense but I don't know if I will be downloading it.

paks is cool but Jennifer van dyck needs work.
I loved many things about this book. the premise was great and the fact that it wasn't a romance was refreshing. however, the narrator only did so so. I thought she was good on the dialogue, but on plot she bogged. the story was fun, I'm not sure I'll read the rest of the series but as a stand-alone it did pretty okay.

Inspiring and tumultuous
I loved this story of Paks and look forward to the remainder of the series. While there was a section that gave me pause due to subject matter, Moon expertly depicted the situation. I don't want to give anything away so I will leave it there. In addition to her plot, the combat is done well. Great read.

Surprisingly Good
No, make that surprisingly GREAT! I loved this series. Each book gets better and better. This isn't a sword and sorcery book (my favorite), but there is a little magic in it and more in each book in the series. This is the story of a young woman who seeks a life in the military and about her growth both in the military and personally and her rise as a warrior and magically in a world where magic is a sin. I was really hesitant to buy it, but I'm sure glad I did. I highly recommend it.

Very detailed very entertaining
Very detailed epic adventure in three parts. very entertaining. I've listened to it over and over. Good to listen to when you're doing something you don't need to pay close attention to.

Revisiting an old favourit...
Here in Sweden, the Paksenarrion-trilogy was a big favourite of mine when it was translated. You can see clearly see here that Elizabeth Moon have been in the military, and the story flows forward without all that unneccessary padding that is so unusal when it comes to fantasy-books (Read: Jordan, Goodkind etc.). Despite the fact that Moon was new in the game, she clearly could write even then. Not much magic in this book (there will be more in the later books).
Jennifer Van Dyck reads the story very well.
Recommended.

Intriguing start
This first book hints at the promise of a great series. The feel of this book is entirely like that of a prologue, what I mean is that the entire books seems like it is setting up something for later. The story itself is actually a bit slow as the entire purpose seems to be to introduce and develop the main character, Paks (aka Paksenarrion). Yes there are some battles, but they are almost glossed over and at no time does it really seem that Paks is in any REAL danger, probably because at the start of the book we learn that the entire book is a memoir of some sort. So who is Paks? Well, Paks is/was(?) a person who achieved some sort of greatness, exactly what and how she achieved that greatness is apparently the content of this series. I don't want to give too much away, the mystery of whom and what Paks becomes is central to the enticement of the novel. I fear if I tell you my suspicions, it will diminish some of the pleasure you may feel reading the novel.
Overall this book kept my attention and I looking forward to book 2. To be honest it failed to REALLY grab me, and if the second book continues in this way I can see myself becoming bored. But, if it fulfills the promise foreshadowed in this book the series might be fantastic.
