About this listen

Experience a new kind of comedic audio documentary from The Sklar Brothers in this Audible original.

Randy and Jason Sklar have a knack for exploring what makes America’s cities unique and wonderful, whether it’s finding out who in San Diego serves the best burritos, why basketball is so popular among those in Bloomington, or why the people of Portland can't let go of their old airport carpeting.

2017 was a year in which everyone retreated to their bubbles – liberal, conservative, and cotton-candy scented. Everyone except Jason and Randy Sklar. They didn’t have a choice; if you’re a comedian, you get a tour date and you go to work. They traveled to red states and blue states, red cities in blue states, and blue cities in red states. What emerged throughout their travels was a real sense of what everyone was going through in a historically insane and twistedly-hilarious year. And Audible recorded their experiences, insights, and off-the-cuff jokes along the way.

On the road, Randy and Jason searched for topics specific to each community they visited – then challenged themselves to see whether they could perform jokes about those topics that locals would find funny. Along with producer and fellow traveler Scott Rogowsky (HQ Trivia), they dug into the American psyche and explored its dark and quirky crevices both on stage and off. Follow their shenanigans in this docu-comedy which visits 10 different cities, each a new chapter and a new adventure. With an arsenal of jokes and a curious mind, the Sklars attempt to answer one burning question: as a nation, can Americans still laugh at themselves?

Plus, as a special bonus in Chapter 12, all listeners receive a full album of the Sklars' stand-up from the tour: The Tour Tapes.

This is not an audiobook. This is not your grandma’s travel program. This is Sklars and Stripes.

Original and excellent.

These two guys offer you, the listener a unique perspective into the world of veteran road comics by bringing you along with them as they travel across America to experience what the cities they visit have to offer, then write and present material to their audience mere hours later. Wow. Was that one sentence? Amazing. Almost as amazing as the talent displayed on this recording.

Funny and smart

As usual the Sklar Bros are funny and smart. I couldn’t stop listening. Found myself making excuses to hide from my family in order to keep listening.

Hilarious and insightful.

Interesting combo of geo-politics and insights into how comedy is written. May help to be left leaning.

Oh say can you Sklar

I can say without a doubt that this is my favorite piece of work the Sklar brothers have ever done. I have been a fan and have followed the Sklars since the 90s. I’m a religious listener to both of their podcasts (“Dumb People Town” and “View from the Cheap Sears”) and have seen them live for both stand up and podcast recordings. After listening to their sadly short lived “Finding the Funny” podcasts I was bummed when new episodes stopped turning up in my Howl feed. This audiobook picks up right where Finding the Funny left off and hits the ground running. I finished it in two days and can’t wait for a sequel (fingers crossed!). Thank you Randy and Jason (and Scott) for this amazingly funny and down to earth gem.

Great listen for comedy nerds

I’ve followed the Sklars for several years and really enjoyed this series. The concept is great and it’s so fun to hear them go from riff (these guys are masters of the riff) to punchline in a matter of hours. They clearly put a lot of thought and love into their city material and it’s paralleled in this project.

Enjoyable, while a little repetitive

The Sklar Bros are very talented and have a funny and amusing perspective on life and the world around us. I enjoyed this book, which is really more like an extended podcast. My only comment is that it is a little repetitive, as you hear then preparing comedy material- then delivering said material. Then - at the end of the entire “book,” some of the material got repeated for a third time! ;-) Okay, got it. Anyways, I would more than welcome another book/podcast of theirs.

it's....ok.

a little Annoying in that they would have to beginning of each chapter tell you what their jokes are going to be which was fine but then you listen to their performance on stage with the same exact thing again so it was almost like each chapter was two of the same chapters being repeated

Just plain funny

Where does Sklars and Stripes rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

These dudes are funny, straight up. I love hearing them come up with their act and it's awesome to hear them work stuff out, then deliver it on stage. This is an awesome way to get a glimpse into the actual life of a touring comedian...and their twin brother.

What other book might you compare Sklars and Stripes to and why?

This book stands on its own, I think it's a pretty unique approach.

Which scene was your favorite?

I love the episode where they go home to their hometown of St. Louis and visit their old high school and pizza place....which by the way, sounds putrid.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was moved to hilarious laughter throughout this adventure.

Fun listen

It’s definitely amusing and you get to hear the creative process. It’s a bit repetitive, but it’s generally very good
