Publisher's summary
Enslaved on a South Carolina plantation, Aminata works in the indigo fields and as a midÂwife. When she is bought by an entrepreneur from Charleston, she is torn from friends and family. The chaos of the Revolutionary War allows her to escape.
In British-held Manhattan, she helps pen the Book of Negroes, a list of blacks rewarded for wartime service to the king with safe passage to Nova Scotia. During her travels in Canada, Sierra Leone, and England, Aminata strives for her freedom and that of her people - even when it comes at a price.
In this captivating novel, Hill portrays one woman's remarkable spirit and strength in the face of adversity, and he brings to life crucial and little-known chapters in world history.

The year is 2004: Lina Sparrow is an ambitious young lawyer working on a historic class-action lawsuit seeking reparations for the descendants of American slaves. The year is 1852: Josephine is a 17-year-old house slave who tends to the mistress of a Virginia tobacco farm - an aspiring artist named Lu Anne Bell. It is through her father, renowned artist Oscar Sparrow, that Lina discovers a controversy rocking the art world: Art historians now suspect that the revered paintings of Lu Anne Bell, an antebellum artist known for her humanizing portraits of the slaves who worked her Virginia tobacco farm, were actually the work of her house slave, Josephine.

Story
Tawawa House in many respects is like any other American resort before the Civil War. Situated in Ohio, this idyllic retreat is particularly nice in the summer when the Southern humidity is too much to bear. The main building, with its luxurious finishes, is loftier than the white cottages that flank it, but the smaller structures are better positioned to catch any breeze that may come off the pond. And they provide more privacy, which best suits the needs of the Southern white men who vacation there every summer.

Story
Sitting in a jail cell on the eve of his hanging, April 1, 1875, freedman Persimmon "Persy" Wilson wants nothing more than to leave some record of the truth - his truth. He may be guilty but not of what he stands accused: the kidnapping and rape of his former master's wife. In 1860 Persy had been sold to Sweetmore, a Louisiana sugar plantation, alongside a striking light-skinned house slave named Chloe. Their deep and instant connection fueled a love affair and inspired plans to escape their owner, Master Wilson, who claimed Chloe as his concubine.

Story
Allan Gurganus's Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All became an instant classic upon its publication. Critics and fans alike fell in love with the voice of 99-year-old Confederate widow Lucy Marsden, one of the most entertaining and loquacious heroines in American literature. Lucy married at the turn of the 20th century, when she was 15 and her husband was 50. If Colonel William Marsden was a veteran of the "War for Southern Independence", Lucy became a "veteran of the veteran" with a unique perspective on Southern history and Southern manhood.

A Woman of Endurance, set in nineteenth-century Puerto Rican plantation society, follows Pola, a deeply spiritual African woman who is captured and later sold for the purpose of breeding future slaves. The resulting babies are taken from her as soon as they are born. Pola loses the faith that has guided her and becomes embittered and defensive. The dehumanizing violence of her life almost destroys her. But this is not a novel of defeat but rather one of survival, regeneration, and reclamation of common humanity.

Transformative and honest, The American Queen is based on actual events that occurred between 1865 - 1889 and shares the unsung history of a Black woman who built a kingdom in Appalachia as a refuge for the courageous people who dared to dream of a different way of life. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love, not even for the honorable Reverend William.

Narration and story A+
This is the first book that I have watched the movie/ mini series first and read the book second. I usually do not do that because they leave so much out or change details in the film version. This time I was not disappointed, sure they had changed a few things In the film but for the most part they stayed true to the story.
The narrator for this was amazing, she transported me to every destination with all manner of emotions. The story was just detailed enough to paint a picture but not too detailed so I felt bored.

Aminata endured more in her lifetime than most people - from losing her baby in the worst way possible to giving birth to her next baby all alone. From ships to colonies, from Africa to New England....this story was absolutely incredible. I was sad when the book ended. Must listen!

Important book
So good yet heartbreaking! Historical fiction at its best. So well written. Adenrele Ojo is a subservient reader fir this story.

Hats off with a standing ovation
Hats off to the author. The narrator made this story come to life. I could feel Aminata's struggles. I don't want to give the story away, but I will say that I cried with her pain and felt her joy. Read this book if you haven't already. I was halfway through before I realized that I had already seen the movie, but as anyone knows, the book is always better with more detail.

I learned so much!
I loved this book even though it is always hard to listen to human beings being so evil to other human beings. It is a gripping story and kept me entranced every minute.

Almost Didn’t Finish Due to Such Poor Narration!
The story is worth a read, for sure. However, so much of the magic was lost due to the narrator chosen. If she would have narrated only the parts of the protagonist, it would have been fine. However, she couldn’t get close to the other characters’ proper accent and then when she tried to switch back to the main character, she made that voice something it hadn’t been. Unfortunate.
