Publisher's summary

Luster, the world where the unicorns fled to escape the Hunters who have sworn to wipe them out, has dangers of its own - as Cara discovers when she attempts to cross that world in a desperate effort to rescue her grandmother.

Each stage of Cara's journey brings new peril, wondrous new characters, and new clues to the mystery of her grandmother's past. And through it all threads the haunting melody of the "Song of the Wanderer," heard on this recording for the first time.

From the enchanting flute notes that introduce the story to its stunning conclusion, listeners will find themselves, like Cara, drawn heart and soul into the wonder of Luster.

Editorial reviews

The inaugural production of Bruce Coville's company, Full Cast Audio, demonstrates great care and attention. Production values are extremely high; for example, when Cara or one of the other characters thinks about something, their internal musings have a subtle, slightly underwater sound that differentiates them from regular speech. A full cast of talented voices bring to life Coville's fantasy, from the agitated, squirrelish Squijim to the low, rumbly Dimblethum and the aristrocratic Medafil. The queen of the unicorns has given Cara a dangerous quest. She must undertake a perilous journey across Luster, the world of the unicorns, and return to Earth in order to find her grandmother. This superb production will enthrall young listeners and their parents alike.

Still Enchanted

Read the first two books as a child and saw the iconic cover of the First Book. Into the Land of the Unicorns. And had to try it. Even after all this time and that the main audience is children. I am still totally and completely enchanted by Luster. Also, I am always a softie for hearing how audio books put into actual song tunes described in only text form. Very much approve of this one.
One thing I have to say though. The voices change. Really through me off for a bit but out of all the books I think our main Female lead (even though it doesn't fit the book exactly, she sounds to old) is my favorite of the voices that play her. :)

Lovely as ever

I loved these books as a kid and am enjoying listening to them while I work. The voice acting is generally pretty spot on and well done.

fun story, but second in series

I am a bit confused as to why this book is available as an audio book, but not the first in the series. If you have read the first, you will enjoy this one. However, I would not suggest buying it if you have not already read the first one.

Nostalgic, Well-perfirmed, and Enjoyable

Great book! I enjoyed very much. Very well done. I enjoyed all the different voices.

One very small complaint that slightly distracts from the overall quality: the actors were over-pronouncing the words and really hitting the t's hard. So hard it ruined the natural flow and was distracting. I just imagine some supervisor saying, "Hit your T's HARDER" until that was all they could focus on. I personally find the very unnatural pauses and tones distracting and a little irritating. Overall, this is very nitpicky and it definitely should not stop anyone from listening to it.
