Micah Cole has been in deep space for four years now. While his parents chase their obsession with finding intelligent life deeper and deeper into the universe, Micah can’t help but dream of the friends he’s left behind and counts the days until the family returns to Earth. When a devastating meteor shower nearly destroys the Coles’s ship, Micah is separated from his family and stranded alone on Sovereign—a vast planet of raging rivers and towering forests. If Micah ever wants to see his family or his home again, he’ll have to learn how to survive on this hostile alien world. Armed with only his wits and determination, he’ll have to battle the elements, his own deepest fears, and a strange presence that might just hold the key to his parents’ obsession—and be his ticket back home.

Our favorite moments from Sovereign
Grab your protein pack and put your helmet on
Planning to land on an unexplored planet with your family is one thing, crash landing without your parents is something completely different. This middle grade adventure reminds me of some of my favorite survival stories—think The Martian meets Hatchet. The narrator, Jesse Einstein vividly expresses all of the wonder, anxiety, and bravery that Micah (our space castaway) experiences on every step of his unplanned adventure—and he made me feel like I should probably invest in my own space survival kit…just in case. And to top things off, lucky for Audible members this month, there's no credit required to listen.
About the Author
Jeff Hirsch is a Virginia native living in the small but mighty state of Rhode Island. He started out as a writer in seventh grade, when a teacher encouraged him to continue working on his craft after she was impressed with a homework assignment—he would later receive an MFA in playwriting from UC San Diego. Hirsch is now the author of several novels for children and young adults, including The Eleventh Plague, The Darkest Path, 39 Clues: Breakaway, Black River Falls, and Unnatural Disasters. Sovereign is his debut middle-grade novel and his first venture with Audible. You can learn more about Hirsch and his work at jeff-hirsch.com.
About the Narrator
Actor, filmmaker, and voice-over artist Jesse Einstein got his start at the USC School of Dramatic Arts, where he was a recipient of the David Dukes Memorial Scholarship for his dedication to the craft. Also an alum of the Atlantic Acting School at NYU and Upright Citizens Brigade, Einstein then went on to narrate audiobooks, voice national commercials, and take on television and film roles. Notably, he stars as Wes Whittaker in the audio drama Red Rhino and has acted in hit television shows including The League, Kroll Show, and Lopez. Einstein is also a filmmaker—he has produced internationally distributed content for Sky TV, Radical Productions, Jubilee Media, Rock the Vote, and more. Couldn't get passed the narration
I would have liked to know what this story was all about but the narration was abysmal. Obviously, tastes differ but there was so certain "quality" to the narrator that I found too much to take.

'Dorf'
Its okay for a free book.
The story is good enough to listen to while doing housework or something. Nothing new or particularly gripping but not bad. Its not at all like either 'hatchet' or the 'Martian' though.
The narrator on the other hand is pretty bad. 'dorf suns', 'dorf planets' you get the idea.

simplistic plot, little character development
First, I want to preface this with the fact that I understand it is a young adult book. That being said, I did find the plot to be simplistic to the point where I wasn't sure why it took 16 chapters to tell the story. A little bit more character development would have gone a long way. The flashbacks just didn't work for me. They seem to take you out of the story flow and by the time that I had realgined with the flashback we were back into the main story. Several of the choices made by the main character seemed inappropriate for the characters age. I don't know about you, but when I was a fifteen-year-old I did not have the wherewithal to understand the finer points of survivalist mentality. The broad brushstrokes covered in the synopsis of the story did have me intrigued at first, but by the third chapter I was ready to move on.

Yeah, better as a youth novel
If you've done a lot of reading, you'll see recurring themes, but if you are young or haven't read all the old stuff, this should be good. For me, it dragged a bit when it got weird in the middle, but the end saved it and I just might try the next one.
As an Audible Original, I am super disappointed at the lack of grammatical editing. The word "sank" is still the past tense of "sink", and "lie-lay-laid" should be clear to you all. If not, I expect you to pay me.
The narration is mostly good with just a few missteps.
