Publisher's summary

A musician is transported into a land of magic-from the number one New York Times best-selling author of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Jonathan Thomas Meriweather is a typical college student, interested in girls, music, and an occasional taste of reefer. But when a journey through an interdimensional portal lands him in a world of talking animals and ominous sorcery, he finds he is on a very different trip indeed. Here, when he plays a strange instrument called a duar, peculiar things happen: powerful magic that may be the only way to stop a dark force that threatens his new world - and his old one. Reluctantly, he finds himself teaming up with a semi-senile turtle wizard; a thieving, backstabbing otter; and a bewildered Marxist dragon to rally an army for the war about to come.

Spellsinger, the first in Alan Dean Foster's eight-book Spellsinger series, introduces a world of magic and mayhem, where animals are people and plunging ahead no matter what the consequences may be the only way to survive.

Finally available as audiobooks!

I bought this book first in 1986 in the german translation and soon after acquired the english originals of the whole series. Since then I can't remember how often I read this book and it's first 5 sequels. This series is one of the few (in my opinion) humorous fantasy series and of the still fewer fantasy series which manage to be humorous without getting silly after a time.
After starting listening to audiobooks (which I have been for more than 20 years) this series is one of those I have been waiting for most eagerly. I bought a dramatized version several years ago, but these didn't contain the original songs (I assume for copyright reasons) which I found quite disturbing, but this one is the real McCoy! It reproduces the content exactly and I like the reading too. So it just remains for me to hope that the other books of the series will be published as audiobooks soon. Please do!

A classic from my teenage years

Found the first couple books at my local library, in the basement where they had old books you could buy for like 50 cents. No clue what i was getting into, bought all three i could find.
Ended up just loving them. The characters are all loveable, jontoms and mudges growing friendship and banter is fun, and the things that happen in all the books are just as odd as they are fantastical. Love them.
Highly recommend.

I like the story

I like the story. I just can’t get past the constant dwelling on the opposite sex The main character is always thinking about one or the other of his female friends and even angry if they talk to others in the same group. Very young adult. This book also has an abrupt ending probably meant as a cliffhanger but it’s so abrupt I’m fine not getting the next book. With that said the story idea is great if the teenage angst was left out it has some interesting ideas. Narrator was great
