Story
In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten. But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family.

Few people know the name Vesper Quill. To most folks, I’m just a lowly lab rat who designs brewmakers and other household appliances in the research-and-development lab at the powerful Kent Corp. But when I point out a design flaw and a safety hazard in the new line of Kent Corp spaceships, everyone knows who I am—and wants to eliminate me. I might be a seer with a photographic memory, but I don’t see the trouble headed my way until it’s too late. Suddenly, I’m surrounded by enemies and fighting for my life.

On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight.

But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Editorial reviews
The first installment in Jennifer Estep's new Elemental Assassin series, Spider's Bite introduces us to Ashland, a southern city in the Appalachians where you're as likely to run across a good barbeque joint as you are a vampire hooker on the corner. It's a gritty film noir-ish world with lots of back alleys, hit squads, and corrupt cops behind most every badge. The main character is Gin Blanco, or Gin to her friends, but in some circles she's known only as Spider the assassin. However, in the secretive world of Ashland, she and her cohorts seem to be just as trustworthy and honorable as the next guy — but are they? Everyone in this town has an angle, a history — and it seems most have blood on their hands.
Actress Lauren Fortgang does a fascinating balancing act voicing Gin. There's ample southern lilt and sly naughty charm to bring the material to life, and there is considerable music and imagery to be mined here in the writing. Yet her voice has enough bite and gravel to ground our no-nonsense morally ambiguous anti-heroine. The challenge for any good book in the urban fantasy genre is the paradox of making wildly fantastical worlds believable. Estep manages to take Ashland — this world of troubled souls, dwarfs, giants, and vampires, as well as human elementals who can tap into the very forces of nature — and make it all seem part of the everyday grind. With Spider's Bite you feel as if you could really walk these streets, but you'd also immediately feel the dirt on your skin and the hairs rising on the back of your neck as you hear noises in the shadows. Fortgang completes the task, making Gin a very believable character, somehow part embittered hard-ass, part loyal friend, and vulnerable lost soul on occasion.
The book takes a cue from its main character. It is patient, carefully spinning a web of atmospheric settings and carefully observed characters — then like a spider it jumps into action from the dark. Ashland is a tricky place and you can never judge anyone by appearances, especially Gin, and it seems there's a long line of those who have died underestimating her. One should be wary, though, of any sexy southern charmer who can not only summon razor-sharp ice daggers from thin air, but also control the very bricks in walls, rocks, and stones, and the very ground beneath her. —Cleo Creech
Publisher's summary
They call me the Spider. I'm the most feared assassin in the South -- when I'm not busy at the Pork Pit cooking up the best barbecue in Ashland. As a Stone elemental, I can hear everything from the whispers of the gravel beneath my feet to the vibrations of the soaring Appalachian Mountains above me. My Ice magic also comes in handy for making the occasional knife. But I don't use my powers on the job unless I absolutely have to. Call it professional pride.
Now that a ruthless Air elemental has double-crossed me and killed my handler, I'm out for revenge. And I'll exterminate anyone who gets in my way -- good or bad. I may look hot, but I'm still one of the bad guys. Which is why I'm in trouble, since irresistibly rugged Detective Donovan Caine has agreed to help me. The last thing this coldhearted killer needs when I'm battling a magic more powerful than my own is a sexy distraction... especially when Donovan wants me dead just as much as the enemy.

Awesome - eager to get book 2
Quality story, insightful character development. plenty of suspense but not too much. an ending that was logical and satisfying.
love this story telling style - it brings all the colorful characters to life. one feels as if we got to meet and even know them.
the, reader's performance scores an 11 on the scale of 1 to 10. Enjoyed the way she did the voices of the other characters but the way she did the main character was perfect.
my only criticism is that it was hard to put it down and get to sleep!
a triumph by all concerned.

A fascinating, almost dystopic setting.
What did you love best about Spider's Bite?
The setting, elemental powers and characterisation of the protagonist is well thought out. There are enough aspects of the known world integrated with the world in which this story takes place. Descriptions are vivid and the protagonist is a complex one that draws the listener in.
What did you like best about this story?
The protagonist's kickass, amoral personality backed up with a personal honour code and very realistic inner conflict between emotions and intellect.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Lauren Fortgang?
As she narrates the whole series, yes. Unfortunately the narration becomes boring as the tone rarely fluctuates enough. The depth of the main character and conflict she experiences lacks nuance in the narration.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Poison in the veins are often realised too late...
Any additional comments?
I really love the series and I'm definitely going to complete it.

Given some of the reviews, I didn't know if I would like the book. Glad I gave it a shot. On the the next in the series!!

Written at maybe a 7th grade level.
What did you like best about Spider's Bite? What did you like least?
The narrator did a good job with the female voices, not so great with the males. The absolute worse part is the heroine chasing a man who is disgusted by everything about her! Really, get a clue. The "SPIDER" , who considers herself the best assassin ever, should have a lot more self respect. The second worse part is how often she brings up her family and repeats the same details EVERY time. By the fifth time its mentioned, with the same details, you really don't have any more sympathy for her.
What could Jennifer Estep have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
To not write like all her readers need their hands held every step of the way.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator has a fair voice for the female characters. It is a soprano and so does not translate to the male voices so well.
Did Spider's Bite inspire you to do anything?
No

Book 1
Adventurous, daring, murderous, risky, and entertaining! Enjoyed the story. Good character development, storyline, and plot.

A book to die for!
Its hard to find a book where you cheer on the bad guy, especially if she is also the heroine. Gin Blanco and her thirst for revenge was beautifully written and directed by the story. It definitely met expectations and I recommend it to anyone. It's thrilling, sexy, action filled, and emotionally captivating. Gin and Spider's Bite, the elemental assasin series overall, is one to die for.

Rating would have been higher except for language
The story line was interesting, but there was too much course language for me to enjoy it as much as I would have otherwise.

Meh
It took me half the book to get into it over several listens. I finished it and there is a hook for book 2 so hopefully it gets better.

Great series, slow narration
I've read this series more than a few times and enjoy it every time. The character development is what I like most. The narrator's spittle noises and slow narration were distracting.
