No one may seize or harm the person or property of another, or invade his privacy, or force him to do his bidding. Americans are fiercely proud of their re-won liberties and the blood it cost them; nothing could make them forswear those truths they hold self-evident. Nothing except the promise of immortality…

He raised an army against those who took everything from him. They should have picked their enemies more carefully. Five centuries from now, on a remarkably Earthlike planet that is mankind's sole colony in space, religious fanatics called the "Salafi Ikhwan" have murdered the uncle of former colonel Patrick Hennessey. That was their first mistake, because uncle was rich and Hennessey was rather a good colonel. But they also murdered Hennessey's wife, Linda, and their three small children, and that was their worst mistake for she was the only restraint Hennessey had ever accepted.

From "the master of alternate history" comes a new trilogy that reimagines a mid-20th century in which General MacArthur, without bothering to consult President Truman, detonates nuclear warheads in several Manchurian cities after China enters the Korean War. In his acclaimed novels of alternate history, Harry Turtledove has scrutinized the twisted soul of the 20th century, from the forces that set World War I in motion to the rise of fascism in the decades that followed.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Story
York August Sixteen was abandoned as a baby, abused and molested as a child, and beaten and harassed as a teen and had his rightful place in the Republic's Space Navy stolen from him. Fighting back against huge government systems was useless. Dispensing justice on an individual, case-by-case basis was more to his liking, yet even that was taken away when he was stationed on a lonely communication space station. York's life would change when he decided to seek justice for people even less fortunate than him.

Robin Moore became one of the first true embedded journalists by training with and fighting alongside the Green Berets in Vietnam. Though fictionalized, his work is an eye-opening exposé of the horrors of the Vietnam War and the basis for the hit John Wayne movie of the same title. Taut, fast-paced, and interspersed with unforgettable accounts of combat, Moore’s novel features an American major who goes "native" with Montagnard tribesmen, a courageous Vietnamese girl who poses as a rabid anti-American Communist to capture a murderous Viet Cong officer, and the unforgettable acts of courage of soldiers in the field.

Pretty poor audio editing
Very obvious edits with completely different sound quality from the surrounding sections. A few editing errors with repeated or garbled words. The story itself is fantastic, of course, being one on Heinlein's best.

Amazing story with sub par recording of the narration
This is my favorite book of all time. An Army Officers Reading List novel, this is the best story of moral obligation, duty, and leadership I have ever read.
It is unfortunate however that the recording for this book was done so poorly. The narrator was fine, but it sounds like mid sentence throughout much of the novel the spliced in another recording that was not of the same quality. Very odd and a bit distracting. Very disappointing. I hope they will rerecord this soon, I would happily buy it again.

The novel is fantastic, I listen on my commute and have conversation starters when I get home or work.

A MUST READ
Such a phenomenal book. The story and the discussion of society, citizenship and military service is incredibly interesting. Let alone the story itself is engrossing.
My only critique is with the recording. While the main actors voice took some getting used to the random, and noticeable, cut/paste ins from different voices sometimes threw off the flow of the reading. It’s minor, but still there.

A Favorite!
Truly a great story. 60 years later and still poignant. As I write this review in mid-2020, I'm watching cities burn and disrespect towards the police and authority ride to levels I hadn't thought possible. It is easier than ever to imagine veterans getting together to put a stop to the lawlessness. And the idea of "earning" your right to vote makes for a good discussion - whichever side you lean towards. The Bug War is there throughout the story, but it's the sociology and politics that make this a truly thought provoking read.
On the "Performance" - Overall, good. There are some pauses in the narration that can make it more difficult to listen, and there were a couple times where bad editing overlapped (repeated a phrase). There was also one or two times when the new splice was significantly different in volume and tone.
Overall, however,, it's a great story. One that will last!
