Den unge Stine er datter af en autoritær dommer. Hun er barndomsven med Jørn, en skraldemands søn og de er begyndt at være kærester. Gennem Jørn rives hun med ind i en skraldemandskonflikt, der bliver mødt med politivold. Oplevelserne gør en stort indtryk på Stine. Hun får gradvist indsigt i det helt anderledes miljø, hvor solidaritet og varme er mere fremherskende end i hendes eget miljø, og hun får mod til at gøre oprør mod sin far. Til sidst er det ham, der skal være dommer i en sag mod en skraldemand, der slog en betjent. Stine har overværet situationen, og hun synes, det hele så meget anderledes ud, end det hendes far mener. Så nu er det spændende, hvordan faderen dømmer i sagen.
Dommerens Stine konfronteres gennem sin ven Jørn med en skraldemandskonflikt. Udfra et oprigtigt socialt engagement følger Stine konflikten på nært hold og er samtidig i opposition til sin far, som hun opfatter som magtmisbrugets forlængede arm. Gennem bogens handling får læseren et levende indtryk af, at en arbejdskonflikt er krævende og brutal. .... Skildringen af konflikten og Stines engagement opfattes som værende troværdigt.
Handlingen er spændende. Både handling og tema rummer momenter, der ikke blot gør bogen meget læseværdig, men også gør den velegnet som skønlitterært indslag i en faglig sammenhæng omkring arbejdskonflikter.

.... Stine er dommerens datter, fra et lidt gammeldags borgerligt miljø..... Hendes oprør hjemme er individuelt og sigter på selvstændighed specielt i forhold til faderen.... Den anden hovedperson er skraldemandens Jørn, som Stine tidligere har leget med. Han har et helt andet grundlag for sit oprør..... De to personer hvirvles nu ind i en række situationer der "dækker" strejken: skruebrækkere, møder, snakke, politiet, retten osv. Der er konkret klassekamp i bogen og der er ideologisk......
Bogen prædiker meget lidt. Den har sin styrke i den solidaritet, varme og organisering, som de strejkende inklusive deres familier gennemfører, og som Stine får kendskab til som en mulighed. Den er både i stand til at samle alders- og klassebetingede erfaringer og frustrationer op, og give dem retning og perspektiv. Bogen er varm, optimistisk og fremadrettet.

Melbye fik sin litterære debut i 1975 med børnebogen "Uro i Lammekøbing", der samtidig er det første bind i serien om Skorpionklubben. Hun startede ud med at skrive børnebøger, men har siden udgivet både ungdoms- og voksenbøger. I mange år var forfatteren aktiv i bestyrelser i Dansk Forfatterforening, i bestyrelsen i PEN og i Retspolitisk Forening.
