About this listen

Spend an entire year investigating the fascinating story of the modern world, from the American Civil War through the end of the twentieth century—from Europe and the Middle East through India, China, the Arabian Peninsula, Australia, and both North and South America!

Designed for parents and elementary/middle grade students (grades 4-8) to share together, The Story of the World, Volume 4 Revised Edition: The Modern Age is widely used in charter and private schools, as well as co-ops around the world. It builds historical literacy, improves reading and comprehension skills in both fiction and nonfiction, and increases vocabulary—all in an enjoyable and entertaining story-like format.

The Story of the World, Volume 4 Revised Edition central text offers 42 narrative chapters, told in chronological order and spanning the entire globe, that begin with revolt against the British in Victorian-ruled India, and end with the Persian Gulf War. Independent listeners can easily enjoy the stories on their own, or parents and teachers can listen with younger students.

Phenomenal !!

Masterfully written and read. Highly recommend everyone read/listen to this. Loved the simplicity but yet the clarity of how this book was written. It made learning history fun.

Finally!!

I've been checking for this for years. Hooray! We use these books in our homeschool. I'm happy we have the option to listen on audible now.

This is my favorite of the four in the series. I wish the others were written more at this level. The first is especially dumbed down. I understand why Bauer wrote them that way, so the child grows up with them, but there is such a huge difference in the writing between 1 and 4.

This book begins when Queen Victoria was ruling England, and the last page in this references Nelson Mandel being elected as president of South Africa in 1994.

The reader does a great job. I've been through 5 chapters so far, listening and following along in the book. Most was the same, but I did notice a few additions.

Really excellent for car rides with daughter

A really excellent history for car rides with my daughter (8) from the same author of three other wonder history books that are so e of my go to audio books - history of the Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance Worlds respectively.

Introduces aot if ideas that kids may not otherwise be familiar with, from X-rays to Genocide in age-appropriate terms.

Seems to skip the Great Leap Forward, quite a lot of Stalinism, and the US War on Drugs, but that's understandable for a target audience of minors.
