Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

Pulitzer Prize winner Larry McMurtry crafts works synonymous with the grandeur and beauty of the American West. Here McMurtry turns his attention to George A. Custer, a complex man who has captivated historians for over a century. From graduating last in his class at West Point to leading the ill-fated 7th Cavalry in the attack at Little Bighorn, Custer forged a legacy - still very much alive today - as one of the West's most enduring historical figures.

Publisher's summary
The final book of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove tetralogy is an exhilarating tale of legend and heroism. Captain Woodrow Call, August McCrae's old partner, is now a bounty hunter hired to track down a brutal young Mexican bandit. Riding with Call are an Eastern city slicker, a witless deputy, and one of the last members of the Hat Creek outfit, Pea Eye Parker, now married to Lorena - once Gus McCrae's sweetheart. This long chase leads them across the last wild streches of the West into a hellhole known as Crow Town and, finally, into the vast, relentless plains of the Texas frontier.

Cowboy stories and movies about the Wild West are full of amazing characters. Yet many of the lawmen we think of as heroes were anything but - some were violent scoundrels and outlaws themselves. Among all the lawmen of the frontier, one man stands out as a true hero: Bass Reeves. In his day, Bass Reeves was the most successful federal marshal in the United States. True to the mythical code of the West, he never drew his gun first. He rounded up hundreds of outlaws and was shot at countless times but was never hit. Bass Reeves was born into slavery.

From humble beginnings in rural Tennessee to his heroic death defending the Alamo, frontiersman, adventurer, and politician David Davy Crockett embodies the spirit and ideals of the national character. Even during his lifetime, tales of the sharpshooting, skilled woodsman were - to his delight - told, retold, and elaborated on. As a US congressman, the former Creek War militiaman steadfastly opposed President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act.

Opening in the settlement of Long Grass, Texas - not quite in Kansas, and nearly New Mexico - we encounter the taciturn Wyatt, whiling away his time in between bottles, and the dentist-turned-gunslinger Doc, more adept at poker than extracting teeth. Now hailed as heroes for their days of subduing drunks in Abilene and Dodge - more often with a mean look than a pistol - Wyatt and Doc are living out the last days of a way of life that is passing into history, two men never more aware of the growing distance between their lives and their legends.

took a little bit but I loved it
as Streets of Laredo got rolling I was having a hard time getting next to the cast of characters. without Gus they seemed a little bit lackluster. I was never all that intrigued with Pea Eye and I'm still not but the other characters really stepped up as the story unfolded, pretty soon I was hooked just like I was with Lonesome Dove

Streets of Loredo - Larry McMurtry
I enjoyed hearing about all the characters that I got to know in Lonesome Dove. I was very perturbed with the Railroad Colonel Terry cut Brookshires pension in half and never did pay Lorena, call or Pea Eye for any expenses. I also think that Call would have had the experience to read the situation of the 2 stray horses near there camp before he was shot by Joey. That wasn’t believable. I would have also liked it better if Maria had lived and Call not lost his arm and a leg.

Consistent character name pronunciation
At least 4 different characters have names pronounced differently than in Lonesome Dove. The story is great, though the abrupt dismissal of long known characters can be off-putting.

A sad conclusion to an era
Where does Streets of Laredo rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
it must be one of my favorite. I am sure that other more eloquent have written about Mr. McMurtry and his novels better than I. But I do feel this series will go down in history as one of the finest American novels. I have listened to the prequels of Lonesome Dove and all the way to the conclusion. What a great story the Streets of Laredo is. From the optimism and hope of the young Rangers, to the story of a strong Man who's age and body can no longer do what it once could.
What other book might you compare Streets of Laredo to and why?
it is a tad like the others in the series. Also like No Country for Old Men. The world is changing and a good strong Man who has dealt justice for all his life is no longer needed. Most don't remember him or what he has done to settle the land that they live in.
Have you listened to any of Daniel Von Bargen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Mr. Von Bargen did a very good job and his voices were great.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
As I grow older myself, seeing a Man who's body just cannot do what it once did seems so real.
Any additional comments?
I may suggest that the listener consider Lonesome Dove first. It is not mandatory but will help make sense for this book.
