About this listen

From the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner: Two girls who grow up to become women. Two friends who become something worse than enemies. This brilliantly imagined novel brings us the story of Nel Wright and Sula Peace, who meet as children in the small town of Medallion, Ohio.

Nel and Sula's devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal—or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.

Friends are the family we choose. When we’re going through hardships or have something to celebrate, our friends are often the people we turn to first. So much of literature, art, music, and film is dedicated to romantic love, but the love between friends can be just as (if not more) rewarding. Of course, plenty of authors "are" writing about friendship, in all its many forms. Here is our list of the very best audiobooks about friendship across genres.

Beautiful, just beautiful

I don’t know what I loved more about this book, the intriguing story, the complicated characters, the colorful language! This book is filled to the brim with symbols and motifs and fascinating questions such as “how does one live a good life, especially when one resides in an oppressive system?” Morrison discusses race, gender, friendship, love, sex, death, war, community, labor, family and so much more in each vibrant chapter of this wonderful work of art!

Deep Book

I really liked Sula! I had to revisit some parts and take notes to keep up with it though. The use of figurative language is used well and Toni Morrison read the book beautifully!

Brand new

I first listened to this book as a young adult on actual cassette tapes. Unfortunately for me then I didn't understand much of what was going on with the "grown folks" in the book. Now having listened to this through the mind of an adult it has opened a whole new world of knowledge surrounding this book. I love Toni Morrison and am thrilled to bits she narrated this story.

Wonderful

Sula is a wonderful and challenging story, beautifully narrated by the author. it is worth listening to again and again. Perhaps it may even teach us something about attempting to understand other people instead of judging them.

Done like only Toni could do it!!!

This book was even more amazing than I knew it would be. Toni's voice added to the journey that we took. The editing was a little off in placesbut it didn't take away from how absolutely amazing this book is.

Transparently descriptive!

I could envision every character in my head with clarity. More importantly, the subtext was clear as though I could see every inflection, every bit of raw emotion.
