Story
Achilles has fled her home and her vicious Myrmidon clan to live as a woman with the kallai, the transgender priestesses of Great Mother Aphrodite. When Odysseus comes to recruit the “prince” Achilles for a war against the Hittites, she prepares to die rather than fight as a man. However, her divine mother, Athena, intervenes, transforming her body into the woman’s body she always longed for, and promises her everything: glory, power, fame, victory in war, and, most importantly, a child born of her own body.

Story
CERHA is a fabricant, and her job is simple: keep Annalise Fletcher safe, a role she performs dutifully and without fail, as she was designed to. Neither she nor her charge expected that this routine assignment could lead to love, but when feelings begin to bloom, neither see fit to stand in their way, and the two find themselves leading a shared life where both must walk a tightrope, precariously balancing between duty, and what domestic bliss is woven into the spaces remaining. For a time, they are as close to happy as they can manage.

A fast paced war against an empire of paper-mache.
This books central thrust is a cute romance, however it frames it against a politically themed adventure that utterly falls through.
Points in favor: A fairly cute poly leabian romance, trans representation, luxury gay space communism, and a skillful narrator, whose inflection, emotiveness, and smooth recitation really carried much of the listening experience. The sex scenes are also remarkably higher quality and if you listen just for the romance and sex, its an alright book. It's got lesbians, their relationships, transhumanism, mechs and they're all equally fast paced.
Points against: The main plot is a paper tiger. There is no tension for the main characters and the third love interest isn't introduced until halfway through the book. There are many criticisms to be had, but i won't get into the details of where things fall apart. The political narrative falls apart at the seams, every conflict is resolved immediately, and has no lasting consequence. Even in the romance and that's the worst part, the political plot being mostly set dressing is fine but the relationship that the book is based on lacking any tension, conflict or something to be resolved really undermines the book.
Suffice to say, the book itself is maybe a 2/5. I really wanted to like this book, but I sadly didn't.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
