Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

WOW... ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

This is a must read/listen. I probably have about 100 books downloaded from Audible and I never write reviews, but absolutely had to for this one! The story was compelling and kept me interested the whole time. How it occasionally told the story from the dog’s view was a great perspective and really added to the story line. Left me in tears at the beginning and at the end, SO GOOD!!

Love dogs love crime love this!

I loved reading this story. The dogs point of view parts were especially fascinating since I always think about what they must be thinking. Story captured my interest quickly and I didn’t want to put it down.

Excellent book!

Well written and good narration. If you love big dogs and a good who-dun-it, this is for you. Easy to follow, and quick paced. I usually listen to my audio books in the car, but this is one I brought in the house too!

Feel good suspense for animal lovers

I loved the story. The narration was superb; perhaps the best I've heard. This is real "page turner". I highly recommend it!

Not a bad read.

The story drugged out to much. I struggled to finish it. The last five chapters were the best.

Love the dog's perspective

Great story which is told from the perspectives of the characters, particularly Maggie the Working dog. Not overly precocious like some dog books.

Gr-r-r-eat K9 Police Procedural

I usually detest books in which animals are characters, so I'm not sure why I chose this, but I really liked it. Decent police procedural, well-read (especially the male characters and the dog chapters), but what elevates it is the growth of the relationship between the police officer and his dog. Both are scarred veterans (he from the LAPD and she from the Marines) and I found the chapters written from the dog's point of view fascinating.

Violence was not gratuitous and there was no torture or serial killers for which I give it high marks. Good potential for what I assume will be a series.
