Aeronautics legend Karl Schuler is murdered on a quiet expressway in the early hours of New Year’s Day, in what looks like a gang hit. Detective James Ruiz and his wife Reyna witness the shooting, and James Ruiz hears the man’s strange dying words. San Jose Homicide detective Mario Flores interviews the couple and begins the search for the man’s killer.
It soon becomes clear that Schuler was not who he seemed to be. The murder itself is not exactly what it appears to be. What happens after the truth is discovered?

Great book especially for Silicon Valley locals!
I am fairly new to the mystery genre but I really enjoyed this book! Numerous diverse characters of all ages and their own flaws flesh out this story with lots of interesting turns. As a native of the Bay Area, this book was especially enjoyable because there are so many references to familiar places and landmarks in the Silicon Valley area! San Jose feels like a character of its own in this book! Recommended!

Can't wait for the next in this series!
This police procedural has it all: fully-developed characters, realistic police work, accurate locations and a fascinating plot. I was reminded of Ann Cleeves' and William Kent Kruger's ability to dive into the psyche and emotions of each character, making each choice seem surprising but inevitable. I"m looking forward to following Detective Ruiz into further adventures!
