Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

They actually have vastly different styles and backgrounds. Yet despite their differences, great managers share one common trait: They don’t hesitate to break virtually every rule held sacred by conventional wisdom. They don’t believe that, with enough training, a person can achieve anything he sets his mind to. They don’t try to help people overcome their weaknesses. And, yes, they even play favorites. In this longtime management bestseller, Gallup presents the remarkable findings of its massive in-depth study of great managers.

Are you above average? Is your child an A student? Is your employee an introvert or an extrovert? Every day we are measured against the yardstick of averages, judged according to how close we come to it or how far we deviate from it. The assumption that metrics comparing us to an average—like GPAs, personality test results, and performance review ratings—reveal something meaningful about our potential is so ingrained in our consciousness that we don't even question it. That assumption, says Harvard's Todd Rose, is spectacularly—and scientifically—wrong.

Much of what we hear about who gets to the top, and how, is wrong. Those who become chief executives set their sights on the C-suite at an early age. In fact, over 70 percent of the CEOs didn't have designs on the corner office until later in their careers. You must graduate from an elite college. In fact, only seven percent of CEOs in the dataset are Ivy League graduates - and eight percent didn't graduate from college at all. To become a CEO you need a flawless résumé. The reality: 45 percent of CEO candidates had at least one major career blowup.

Publisher's summary
Combing vivid reports of the latest scientific research, compelling case studies, and great storytelling, Team Genius show managers and executives how to look at their teams in a radically new way. It explores vital question that could mean the difference between success and obsolescence. Do you know how to re-organize your sub-par teams into top performers? Could you identify which of the top-performing teams in your company are reaching the end of their lifespan? Would you have the courage to shut them down? Would you know how to create the replacement team to be just as effective - without losing time or damaging morale? And most important, are your teams the right size for the job?
Rich Karlgaard and Michael S. Malone share insights and real-life examples gleaned from their careers as journalists, analysts, investors, and entrepreneurs who travel the world meeting successful teams and team leaders. Throughout, they reveal some "new truths" about teams, including:
- The right team size is usually one person less than managers think they need;
- Everything you know about performance compensation is probably wrong;
- The greatest challenge facing good teams is not how to succeed, but how to die;
- Good "chemistry" often makes for the least effective teams;
- And more.
Eye-opening, grounded, and essential, Team Genius is the next big idea that will revolutionize business today - and tomorrow.

Story

How the world's leading innovators push their ideas to fruition, time and time again. Edison famously said that genius is 1 percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration. Ideas for new businesses, solutions to the world's problems, and artistic breakthroughs are common, but great execution is rare. According to Scott Belsky, the capacity to make ideas happen can be strengthened by anyone willing to build their organizational habits and harness the forces of community.

Dr. David Burkus is a highly regarded and increasingly influential business school professor who challenges many of the established principles of business management.

A must read for all leaders!
This work fills a gap in the literature on leadership. It treats team formation and dynamics scientifically based upon modern research. I have not come across a better and more comprehensive treatment of the subject.

Pretty useless.
What disappointed you about Team Genius?
Despite the promise of the "new science of teams," there's not much science here - just a lot of generalizations that are not testable. You can't really implement anything from this book.

Great Information, needs a .pdf
Honestly, a portion of the book is the teamwork makes the dream work pep talk and then it transitions to a long audio recitation of a questionnaire....rinse, repeat.
The information between derailments is phenomenal so if you can deal with the format issues, it's worth listening. 🤓
Go, Team!!
