About this listen

Sam Gribley is terribly unhappy living in New York City with his family, so he runs away to the Catskill Mountains to live in the woods - all by himself. With only a penknife, a ball of cord, 40 dollars, and some flint and steel, he intends to survive on his own. Sam learns about courage, danger, and independence during his year in the wilderness, a year that changes his life forever.

Critic reviews

"How wonderful that this 1959 classic is now an audiobook. Narrator Michael Crouch introduces...New York City resident Sam Gribley as he relocates to the Catskill Mountains with only a pocketknife, a rope, $40, and a fire starter. Crouch deftly embraces the speech patterns and vocabulary of the day, and warmly describes the atmospheric setting. Since Sam is usually alone, there's little dialogue, but his thoughts and endearing conversations with the wildlife he meets sound genuine. Listeners will particularly enjoy sharing time with Frightful, the young peregrine falcon Sam adopts and trains to retrieve food. It's inspiring to hear how Sam adapts to nature and uses it to clothe, warm, and feed himself and his menagerie. Vivid descriptions of the seasons, storms, and animals offer a constant 'you are there' feel." (AudioFile magazine)

"Should appeal to all rugged individualists who dream of escape to the forest." (The New York Times Book Review)

"An extraordinary book.... It will be read year after year." (The Horn Book)

In the woods

So relaxing and fun to virtually be living in a tree, living off the land, friends of animals, and surviving well. Read this as a kid and now as an adult. Enjoyed the adventure thoroughly.

Great

Enjoyed the movie as a kid at Sam’s age. The book was a wonderful renewal of those memories. As usually the case, the book much better than the movie.

A great story that captures the imagination, and makes one long to attempt to survive in the wilderness.

A book I read once, read beautifully

I wasn’t expecting to so thoroughly enjoy the adventure which thrust me back in my youth both as the hero of the story but also as the young person who read it years ago. Great fun!
